Make my university dream come true!

Hello! My name is Ivanna Tetera and I am a 19-year-old from Ukraine! I recently graduated both from high school in Ukraine and the International Baccalaureate in the United World College Robert Bosch College. I am passionate about art, namely drawing and photography, reading, and nature.

For most of my life, I have dreamt to get a strong education in Europe, with a great international outlook, which would help me get a career in matters of international importance, in areas such as diplomacy, for I would like to contribute to solving some of the world's most pressing issues of today, such as international conflicts or to offer humanitarian aid.

My first step in this direction has been, after graduating from my high school in Ukraine, accessing an international community to better learn about the world's different cultures, but also about its problems. To this end, I won a scholarship to study in one of the world's few United World Colleges, namely the Robert Bosch College in Freiburg, Germany, alongside students from around 90 other countries from all over the globe. It was here that I learned about issues such as global warming and human rights violations, famine and resource depletion. It was also here that I was given the opportunity to collaborate with people from many different cultural backgrounds, to learn a lot about many countries of the worlds and to realize that teamwork and collaboration between people, no matter how different they are, is the only way that can mobilize the youth and the people of the planet to ensure that it has a better future, or any future at all. I aim to carry this message and to hopefully use it in my future work to take my part in helping the world become a better place.

During my 2 years in Freiburg, aside from the International Baccalaureate, I interacted with many locals and I was engaged in actively bringing something valuable to the community. I volunteered in a local refugee camp, working with people of all ages, but mostly with children, trying to help them integrate into the community, developing their motor and communicatory skills by playing games with them and teaching them English. Aside from this, I believe the work that me and the other volunteers did was very helpful for the children to get over their troubled past and feel psychologically at ease and welcome into their new home. Truthfully, I was grateful for the occasion I had been given, to study in such a community and a school that I would have never been able to afford on my own without a scholarship, and I wanted to give something back to the community.

Now, having finished my baccalaureate, I would love to continue my studies in Europe, but, unfortunately, European universities offer little chances for students from outside the European Union to join them, unless they are able to pay tuition fees that, to someone coming from a background such as mine, are entirely inaccessible. In Europe, international students from outside the European Union pay significantly more than those from countries that are members of the EU.

I am looking to continue my studies in the Netherlands, at the University of Amsterdam. There, I would study European Studies or Political Science, majoring in International Relations, a field that I have been very passionate about since my experience in the United World College. I truly believe a career in this field would allow me to bring my experience in an international community and enrich it, in order to, in the future, work with international institutions with real agency in the world. This being said, the tuition fee for all the three years that a bachelor's programme in the university asks for is €26,400, to which I need to add my living costs (accommodation and food), as well as other subsequent costs (books, health insurance, transportation, etc.) The only scholarship available to me right now is a one-time scholarship of €5,000; the rest of the money will have to be provided by me. I have been working for the past year and saving and I plan to continue to do so, as well as working during university, but this did not earn me a very big sum, especially since earnings in Ukraine cannot be compared to those in the EU.

This is why I am asking for your help. It would mean a great deal for me to be able to pursue my dream and I would be incredibly grateful, to each and every one of you, if you donated any amount that your heart would be willing to give, to this goal. I assure you that I will keep all of your contributions in my mind and heart if I will be able to follow my dream and get an education, and I will do my best to succeed in a truly meaningful career. I personally thank all of you and I will offer you my honest gratitude personally, should you choose to offer your name on your donation. If you want, I will also prove my gratitude by offering you some small drawings made by me, as a token and a present.
