Maisey Bean: Mother-Daughter Small Business

THE BEGINING
Maisey Bean developed from the inability to find a really cute crossbody purse for a vacation. Finding something to suit my needs proved to be difficult so we decided to design and create our own. With a giant stash of vintage quilt shop fabric, we had plenty of options. Once the crossbody purse was completed, we were inspired to create more. We sat down and wrote out our pattern for the basic drawstring backpack which was originally created as gifts for my nieces (which they absolutely love!) After some time and thought, we decided to make multiple drawstring backpacks and try to sell them on eBay. Since we were working with vintage fabrics, the ability to mass produce the exact same items would be difficult so the idea of creating one of a kind pieces truly developed then we decided to move to Etsy.

ABOUT US
We are a mother and daughter duo. Laura (mother) has a background in quilting, sewing and business ownership. Kelsie (daughter) has a always wanted to have a creative business.

With 2020 being a difficult year for most, Laura and Clayton (husband and father) were on the verge of great success with their farm business in Illinois. With the mass shutdowns, lack of ability to attend farmers markets plus losing their side jobs, their business did not survive. With the loss of all their sources of income, they also lost their home of over 30 years and Laura's childhood home. With that, they moved to Arizona to live with Kelsie and her family.

WHATS IN THE NAME?
Since we decided to take this to the next level and start to develop into a small business, we needed a name. After weeks of debating, the name "Maisey" kept coming to mind. Maisey being the combination of Mickey and Daisey (Kelsie's dog's names). But that didn't seem complete. Mom came up with Maisey and I came up with Bean. Bean being the middle name of mom's beloved pug who passed away some years ago.

Our logo contains a dragonfly. A symbol of change and ability to adapt but it means more to us than that. Meeting my grandfather (Laura's father) after a long absence from Laura's life for the first time when I was 6 was truly a special moment. We went fishing and were surrounded by dragonflies. I remember this day vividly. We were lucky to have another 2 years with him before he took his own life after a long battle with PTSD from serving in Vietnam. Whenever we see a dragonfly, we know he is with us and we wanted to keep his spirit alive through this journey of creating our business. Grandpa Frank was also an artist and creative. He was referred to as a "jack of all trades and master of none." The original quote being "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” Which describes him perfectly and he has passed that down to us.

OUR PLAN
Our dream of Maisey Bean is slowly becoming reality. With some financial support, we can truly expand.

What we need:

Our stash of vintage fabrics is dwindling and soon we will need to replenish with fun, new fabrics. Using and combing new prints and patterns keeps each item truly unique and one of a kind.

Space and organization has been a struggle. We are crammed into a small room and organizing all of our supplies has been difficult. We need to reorganize our office/workplace to make production much smoother.

Equipment. The machines we are using have gotten us this far but we are needing industrial use machines. Mom's machine is 22 years old! These machines are not made for what we are needing them for. Time for an upgrade.

We have been lucky enough to have many supplies already on hand but will need to upgrade our tools.

We want to be able to buy our supplies locally. Supporting U.S. based and community businesses is important to us.

We have a lot of pride and confidence in our products especially in terms of quality so having the right equipment is a necessity.

We also hope to one day employ someone who shares the same values, determination and love of the craft as we do.
