Mai's College Tuition for Audiology

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

I am starting this campaign on behalf of my friend, Mai. I would appreciate it if you can help. Here is her story:

“Five years ago, I started volunteering as an interpreter for a non-profit organization which comes several times a year to Vietnam to train the local teachers and technicians in AVT and Audiology. After the 2nd year of volunteering, I knew I wanted to further my interest and pursue my degree in Audiology.

At the moment, my country does not offer any Audiology programs. Thus, my only option is to study aboard. I am excited to say that I have been accepted to pursue a Master of Audiology at Canteburry University in New Zealand. Unfortunately, the tuition for international students is high - around 25,000 USD per year -  and this cost is not accessible to the average Vietnamese income which is about 300 USD per month.  Knowing that I would need to save money as well as build up the necessary skills, for the past 3 years, I have been working at 2 different cochlear companies while finishing my Bachelors’ Degree. It has been a fullfilling and emotional journey, seeing kids grow and develop their language and skills over time, yet always asking the same question,  “How am I able to help more kids?” Currently, there is only one certified Vietnamese Audiologist working in Vietnam out of the population of 95 million!

I did my research on banks in Vietnam and they don’t offer student loans, which means I have to start paying back with the bank interests the next month after getting the loan. In addition to the tuition fee, being an international student, I also need to have 10,000 USD sitting in my bank account to prove my financial situation when applying for a student visa. This is way beyond my family and my capabilities and I need your help! If can raise 30,000 USD plus all of my savings, I can take care of the first school year.  I believe that I will be able to get loans and earn enough to get through the last year of the program.

I not only want to provide Audiological services directly but in the future, I hope to also start an Audiology program in Vietnam. The program would support people who want to be an Audiologist but may not have the opportunity to go abroad due to the language barrier, in turn, benefitting the hearing loss community in Vietnam. I know this is a big dream and I need to gain a lot of skills, knowledge, and experience. Taking part in an Audiology program will open up a door to  my passion in  helping people with hearing loss – especially children - get proper access to sounds, which we all take for granted!

Putting this campaign up is very difficult for me, however, this is the chance and hope for me to pursue my dreams and contribute to the society. Any way you can help means a lot and is much appreciated – from donating to spreading the word! Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Mai Nguyen”
