Maine Roadtrip to the Future

The impacts of accelerating climate change are visible all around us…wildfires, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and sea ice, wildlife extinctions, insect-borne diseases… the list is long. The recent UN climate report based on the best scientific research forecasts that we have just 12 years to turn the tide and dramatically change our fossil-fuel dependent, over-consumption lifestyles, if we want to preserve a livable environment for our children and future generations.

It would be easy to fall into despair given the magnitude of the problem, and ask: “What can I do about it?” The good news is that all around us people are waking up to the climate crisis and growing numbers aredoing something about it.

Here in Maine, as we drive around the state, we see the hopeful signs of Maine homeowners, businesses, and municipalities investing in a resilient future. These hopeful signs include rooftop solar and community solar farms, heat pumps, home and community gardens and greenhouses, electric vehicles and charging stations, small and utility-scale wind generation, summer and winter farmers markets, and more. What we know is that, as these Mainers adopt climate solutions, their neighbors will be inspired to follow with similar actions. And the vision for an environmentally resilient state begins to emerge…home by home, business by business, town by town.

And here’s where you come in.

We are two Maine filmmakers, who produced a full-length documentary two years ago featuring the powerful stories of 13 Maine climate justice activists. The film is still playing to diverse audiences inside and outside of Maine.  It was made possible in part through a crowdfunding campaign, similar to this.

We have a new film under development. We are eager to put the finishing touches on that film….a fast-paced, uplifting, short video that documents Maine climate solutions. We are asking for your help to support the final production of the film, its distribution, and follow-up programming we are developing for school-age youth to discover, document through film, and share on an interactive website the climate solutions in their own communities.

We have in hand Maine solutions photos and filmed interviews with several Maine “solutionaries”…all ready to be pulled together with an upbeat score written and produced by a Maine musician.  We have a plan to distribute the film and other informational materials to Maine lawmakers in early January, just as they begin to deliberate on legislation aimed to address climate change. We will follow up with them in their districts and get the film out to public libraries, community movie theaters, and other venues where it can complement other programs.  Our belief is that seeing the climate solutions already in place will motivate policymakers and citizens to join this growing movement. To change everything we need everyone to do their part.

We are grateful for whatever support you can contribute and please spread the word!

Thank you!
