Mahendar Basupally (fondly referred to as Mahi by friends and family) was in an unfortunate car accident on 14th of October leaving him in a critical condition. Mahi had to be airlifted to the hospital with severe spinal cord injuries. On the 14th and 15th, doctors at the Inova Fairfax Hospital operated him for a C4-C5 spinal cord dislocation, injuries to C6, C7, T1 spines and other nerve damages in the spine. While not life threatening and stable after the surgery, it left him Tetraplegic (paralyzed from the neck down with loss of sensation and control). Due to extensive damage to nerves (that helps with involuntary functions like breathing), Mahi had to be on Ventilator Support in ICU.
The doctors have given a bleak picture of getting back to normalcy and suggested the recovery might be very slow (upto a year or more). We do not know if Mahi will need any additional surgeries. After two weeks at ICU in Inova Fairfax Hospital, Mahi was shifted to Bridgepoint Rehabilitation in Washington DC on the 29thand still on Ventilator Support. Doctors have also asked that he be shifted to a Chicago rehab via air ambulance for further treatment post respiratory recovery (and off ventilator support).
Mahi has a young family and lives with his wife and two very young kids in Ashburn, Virginia.
The treatment and recovery is very expensive and not all of it is covered by insurance. The fund is to help Mahi and family at this time of need and will be primarily used for medical expenses and long term rehabilitation towards full recovery.
Thank you for your donations and thoughts. Mahi's Family and Friends
