The Magic Hat Cafe collects and redistributes edible food which is going to waste, and uses it to feed the community instead. We collect surplus food from food businesses across Newcastle and the North East.
We are very concerned about the potential impact of the Covid-19 outbreak. There is the risk of even more food being wasted at a time when people might be going hungry due to self-isolating or a change in their financial situation.
We want to help feed Newcastle during these difficult times, but we need your help to do this. We are no longer receiving any income from our regular cafe and market but we are still paying our staff, paying for fuel and covering our other ongoing costs. If you can make a donation we would be extremely grateful. Any funds raised will go towards helping us to continue to provide for the community and our staff.

Who are we?
The Magic Hat Café has been running pop-up events and catering in Newcastle for over 5 years. We have been running a weekly cafe and market in Byker for almost 2 years. We engage with local shops, restaurants, supermarkets, farms and other businesses to intercept their surplus food that is still perfectly good to eat and that would otherwise end up in the bin.
We operate on a pay-as-you-feel basis. Customers decide the value of the meal they’re served (or fresh produce from our market) and we welcome contributions of skills, time or even just spreading the word as payment. We are a diverse group of people who share a common passion for fighting food waste and feeding our community.
The Magic Hat Café is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company.
