Mae's House Learning Academy

I am Dr. Shauntazia Shorter, founder and CEO of The Carrie Mae Williams Center. Our mission is to prevent and mitigate the lifelong effects of ACE's within Nashville's black community. It's been on my heart to begin a learning academy that supports and develops OUR kids not only academically, but Socially, Emotionally, and even Spiritually. As an educator in public education, I worry that our schools' capacity to ensure the plans to create equitable learning experiences in every classroom will actually trickle down to this new virtual environment for our children.
I also worry that access to vital resources that students need survive will be reduced substantially by quarantine guidelines. We all know that when there is a glitch in the system, poor minority communities get hit the worst.
Poverty and access are at the heart of ACE's in our community, and our kids need a space that will support their needs in this uncertain climate. So, I'm stepping out on faith to ask for support to create this academy, which will provide the following supports:
1. Online tutoring that support academic growth
2. STEAM enrichment
3. Online workshops that build emotional intelligence
4. Access to virtual social workers who can access your household needs and connect families to the right support
Your contributions will help support the following areas:
Finding safe spaces to serve within and around the Nashville area
Student Tuition/ Fees
Education Equipment
Teacher Compensation
Virtual support for students will begin as soon as May 31, 2021
