Maddie needs a CGM

My 13 yr old daughter Maddie was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes ,10 yrs ago at the age of 3 .Type 1 Diabetes is an unpreventable autoimmune disease in which your own body attacks and destroys the beta cells in your pancreas. The beta cells produce insulin .Without insulin a person cannot survive .Maddie wears an insulin pump that infuses insulin via a small plastic needle under her skin 24/7.
As time has passed over the last 10 yrs , Diabetes and its never ending tasks to keep Maddie alive and healthy became just another thing we did.
Then on August 13th , Diabetes reared its ugly head and reminded us that Maddie lives with a life threatening condition .
Maddie was found unresponsive in bed when I went to wake her .I injected her with glucagon( an emergency needle for extremely low blood sugar) then called 911.While i was on the phone with 911 , Maddie went into a seizure ,choked on vomit and turned blue from a blocked airway .Luckily the glucagon started working which stopped the seizure and I was able to clear her airway enabling her to start breathing again .She has fully recovered with no lasting effects.
This low blood sugar seizure could of been prevented with a device called Dexcom 5 which is a continuous glucose monitor otherwise known as a CGM .The patient wears a small button like device on their arm with a thin wire under the skin .This constantly measures blood glucose while sending those blood glucose levels to a cellphone of the patient and can also be sent to other phones such as mine .If Maddie had a CGM on that day two weeks ago , I would of received an alert on my phone warning that her blood glucose was dropping low.It could of been treated before the blood sugar was so low that she had a seizure .
Maddie's father and I are separated, his extended health benefits DO NOT COVER CGMS and he has refused to pay for it .In our separation agreement I ended up agreeing to pay medical costs in an effort to end the fighting. BC Pharmacare does not cover cgms either . I cannot afford to purchase one .
I am hoping that thru this fundraiser I could raise enough to purchase a CGM and supplies for one year .The operating cost is $5600 a year.
This is not something I want to do but rather something I have to do as my childs life could depend on it .
Thank you in advance
Kim
