Our grandmother, Annette Crosby, affectionately known by most as “Ma”, is the kindest and most generous woman we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Ma would do anything for anyone. She is known to cook for all who walk through her door, and makes enough to feed an army! She will gladly give you tips on how to clean your carpet or get a stain out of your shirt as well as advice on how to make the perfect pie shell. Ma is a compassionate, joyful, and Godly woman.
On Saturday, March 26, Ma was being her typical, ever-compassionate self and helping a friend return home from an assisted living facility. In a freak accident, Ma was badly injured by a truck knocking her down and dragging her. She describes that while unloading a wheelchair from the bed of the truck, the truck slipped out of gear. Afraid that her friend would be pinned between the tailgate and another car, Ma pushed her friend out of the way, but was hit by the tailgate and knocked to the ground then drug underneath the truck.
Ma was taken by ambulance to Freeman Medical Center in Joplin, MO and assessed. They determined that the damage done to her upper body was significant enough that she be LifeFlighted to Kansas City’s University of Kansas Medical Center. It was determined that Ma’s injuries consisted of broken C1, C2, and C3 vertebrae, an exposed cheek bone, a partially removed ear, broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder, a bruised lung, and several broken hand bones. In addition, the skin on her hands was peeled off, exposing her bones, tendons and muscles. Any one of these injuries would be enough to warrant significant hospitalization, therapy, and pain. But Ma is also one of the toughest women we have ever known. She endured six hours of surgery on Easter morning to address the broken hand bones, skin on her hands, her cheek and her ear. Further surgery for her neck was postponed until it can be determined if it is absolutely necessary. She will be having a second skin graft on her face within the next few days.
While Ma is the epitome of “tough”, the road ahead is a long one. Her husband has traveled to Joplin and to Kansas City with her, which is impressive in itself. Her daughter has stayed by her bedside throughout her time in the hospital. We, the grandchildren, are attempting to relieve some of their stress the best we can. Ma will require additional surgery, as well as extended time in a rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility after hospital discharge.
We are asking for any help you would like to give Ma and Pa and their family. We are requesting prayers for a speedy recovery and for peace of mind for our family. If you would like to contribute to relieve the financial burden of an extended hospital stay so far away from home and the extended facility stay, we welcome any support. This money will be used for medical bills, gas for trips to and from facilities, meals and lodging. The outpouring of love that has already been shown to our family is incredible!
