A Miracle for Mackenzie

On Monday morning I received heartbreaking news at school that one of my preschool students had passed away on Sunday. Mackenzie Plick was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease, a rare genetic neurodegenerative disorder with no treatment or cure, after a difficult road of testing and misdiagnosis. Putting aside the fact that most children affected by this disease pass away by the age of five, Mackenzie’s wonderful parents selflessly supported her going to school twice a week. Mackenzie's mom, Colleen, was no longer able to work as she needed to be home to care for Mackenize.  The family's health coverage was provided by Colleen's job which has made the financial impact of this crisis two fold.  Mackenzie's dad, Brian, was able to obtain insurance through his job, but his monthly income has been reduced as a result.  The family has incurred costs of hospital stays, testing,  travel expenses, and now the loss of their child. For almost two years Mackenzie brought even more happiness, love, and hopefulness into my classroom, while leaving her little footprints on my heart forever. She was the smallest, yet strongest, most beautiful soul I have ever met and she will be missed every day. In their time of need, I'm asking for help from my family and friends to make their healing a little easier for them. If a donation is not possible, please keep them in your heart and prayers during this difficult time. Heaven has gained another beautiful innocent little angel.
