<div>Maciej, 36 years of age, with four young children (8, 7, 5 and 3 years old) is fighting harder than ever for his life. His battle against liver, spine, neck and lung cancer is becoming a more painful one to watch as the hours, minutes and days are becoming harder for Maciej to complete and his breaths are becoming weaker. This has been a courageous battle spanning over 5 years with numerous treatments across the country, abdominal surgeries, spinal surgery, devasting prognosis and aggressive cancer spread.

<div>We have written this page for Maciej and Aldona during their toughest days in the hope of relieving some of their financial burden. This agonising journey has had a monumental strain on their mental and physical wellbeing whilst trying to remain present for their four young children. Aldona and Maciej are childhood sweethearts; they met at the age of 17 and have been inseparable ever since. They were married at 23 and had a very happy seven years before their lives were blighted by cancer.

<div>Please dig deep and find it in your hearts to help a family in a major crisis. We understand the strains of cost of living for everyone; that said, we do also implore you to think about supporting four children their futures, the cost-of-living crisis, house prices, mortgage repayments (which they still have) and the pressure on Aldona who must deal with these unavoidable outgoings. They have both worked so hard to provide for their family and do not deserve this unforeseen hardship. No donation is ever too little (nor ever too generous).

<div>This has been the most heart breaking, devastating and tiring journey of our lives. The timeline of events has all become a haze so apologies for any confusion but the pain &amp; being in constant receipt of hard news blurs the order of events. Please see the timeline below and the struggle our family have been through with some of the dates below.

<div>-	Feb 2018: Maciej was admitted to hospital with suspected and wrongly diagnosed gallstones, instead, a large abdominal tumour was seen on an MRI. After approximately 6 months of painful inconclusive biopsies, Maciej was diagnosed with a rare form or retroperitoneal sarcoma and given 6 months to live. At the time of diagnosis, Aldona was expecting their third child and they had two little girls aged 2.5years and 12 months old.

<div>-	By June 2019, Maciej completed 6 rounds of chemo (with only a partial response from the tumour) and preoperative radiotherapy. There was huge concern about the ability to achieve clear surgical margins and the success of his operation.
</div>

<div>-	September 2019: The excision of the tumour with resection and graft of the aorta was a success! Finally, good news and hope!
</div>

</div>
<div>-	Post surgery: Unfortunately, Maciej’s road to recovery post-surgery was not smooth and due to his hugely high-risk and complex surgery, this resulted in bowel adhesions and bowel obstruction, with numerous hospital visits, miss-diagnosis and serious concerns.
</div>

</div>
<div>-	August 2020: Unfortunately, further metastasis (cancerous tumours) were detected on Maciej’s lungs and other metastasis were also detected in his lumbar spine. Immensely worrisome due to the tumours position and the impact on the spinal cord.
</div>

<div>-	February 2021: Surprise Baby number four was born who continues to bring such joy to the family (now age 3) and was a welcome distraction from the painstaking journey Maciej continued to face. He has been a blessed addition.
</div>

</div>
<div>-	March 2021: Maciej attended an immunotherapy trial at Royal Marsden Hospital. Each week, family and friends would give up their time to take Maciej and support Aldona with the children and her newborn. He would feel terribly unwell post-trial so Aldona would look after Maciej and the children relying on family and friends around to support where possible.

<div>-	November 2021: Immunotherapy discontinued as the disease progressed and the trial was not working. This came as such heart-breaking news as this was a glimmer of hope for Maciej and Aldona.
</div>

<div>-	November 2021: More disease spread to Maciej’s neck and a cancerous tumour was diagnosed. More rounds of chemotherapy were administered.
</div>

</div>
<div>- October 2022: Disease progression in his spine and Maciej was being less able to weight-bare and walk. His sister-in-law remembers running into his home when she heard him calling from the kitchen; poor Maciej was panicked because he could no longer feel or move his legs. Maciej, always trying to protect Aldona, would say that he was ‘okay’ and it was a ‘blip.’ Unfortunately, this ‘blip’ kept progressing leading to more invasive surgery.

<div>-	November 2022: L3 spinal surgery to relieve spinal cord compression to prevent paralysis. The risks of this procedure being enormous particularly with the risks of paralysis post procedure, the risk of recovery due to his immunocompromised condition and the co-existing cancers in his lungs and neck.

<div>-	January 2023: Started compassionate use of a targeted drug. We also attempted ‘alternative medicine’ in the form of diet

<div>-	July 2023: Disease progression, further radiotherapy to lumbar spine

<div>-	September 2023; Maciej was accepted onto another clinical trial at the Royal Marsden. Each week family, friends and Aldona took Maciej to London for his treatments. This could have been for hours, days or overnight stays. Again, Maciej feeling terribly sick post treatment. Aldona constantly caring for Maciej and her four children.

<div>-	November 2023: Maciej’s tingling in his legs returned and again he was starting to lose feeling in his lower limbs. The concerns of his spine returned.
</div>

<div>-	December 2023: Maciej underwent another spinal procedure on his thoracic spine due to disease progression. Once again, huge risks taken to undergo this procedure with Maciej’s weak condition and co-existing morbidities.
</div>

<div>-	24th / 25th December: Due to the wonderful teams at hospital, Maciej was discharged so he could spend Christmas with his family albeit a painful, tiring and worrying one for Maciej and Aldona. Since Christmas, Maciej has fought and with heavy hearts we are seeing Maciej deteriorate.

<div>February 2024; Palliative care from home, fighting for his life!

<div>Maciej has had all the chemotherapy and radiotherapy a person can tolerate in their lifetime. Trials, diets and surgeries were the only options and gave them hope (for a short amount of time).
</div>

</div>
<div>Whilst dealing with all of this, Maciej continued to work when he could around his treatments to ‘give him purpose because he was too unwell to play with his children’ and wanted to do all that he could, being the bread winner, to continue providing for this wife (Aldona, a teacher) and family of 4 young children. We would like to stress how dependent the children and Aldona were on Maciej’s income, and he felt that this was the only way he could take care of his family as everyone around him had to care for him. There was little, if zero financial help available to them and this took a tremendous toll on the family emotionally and financially, yet, Aldona has been a pillar of strength caring for Maciej and running the family home, working where possible, since his diagnosis. Now, she cares for her husband at home administering medication during his final days. No family deserves to go through such turmoil for so many years, nor do such young children deserve to be around such pain and watch as their Father deteriorates. We hope you take the time to donate, this would give the family such relief and time to grieve without the heavy strain of finances looming over them.

<div>Zwracamy się z gorącą prośbą o wsparcie tej rodziny w obliczu ogromnego kryzysu jaki ich spotkał. Zdajemy sobie sprawę z trudności związanych z codziennym życiem każdego z nas, ale apelujemy do ludzkiej wrażliwości, która przecież istnieje w każdym z nas. Prosimy o zastanowienie się nad losem czwórki dzieci, ich przyszłością, kryzysem kosztów utrzymania, nadal spłacanym kredytem hipotecznym i nad wielką presją, którą jest obciążona Aldona. Aldona musi teraz stawić czoło nieuniknionym wydatkom samodzielnie, musząc jednocześnie być dla swoich dzieci oparciem w najtrudniejszych chwilach. Obydwoje z Maciejem, od początku, ciężko pracowali, aby zapewnić byt swojej rodzinie. Cierpienie, które ich nagle dotknęło jest wyjątkową niesprawiedliwością… Każda kwota, nawet najmniejsza, się dla nich liczy.

<div>Przebieg wydarzeń:

<div>•	Luty 2018: Maciej został przyjęty do szpitala z podejrzeniem kamieni w woreczku żółciowym. Jak się potem okazało była to błędna diagnoza. Podczas badania rezonansem magnetycznym wykryto u Macieja guza w jamie brzusznej. Po ok. 6 miesiącach badań i wielu bolesnych biopsjach, postawiono diagnozę rzadkiej postaci mięśniaka przestrzeni zaotrzewnowej, prognozując dla niego tylko 6 miesięcy życia. W chwili diagnozy Aldona była w ciąży z ich trzecim dzieckiem, mając już dwie małe córeczki: jedną w wieku 2,5 roku, a drugą mającą zaledwie 12 miesięcy.

<div>•	Do czerwca 2019 roku Maciej przeszedł 6 sesji chemioterapii (niestety guz zareagował tylko częściowo na to leczenie) oraz radioterapię przedoperacyjną. Pojawiały się obawy dotyczące pomyślnego przebiegu operacji.
</div>
<div>•	Wrzesień 2019: Operacja wycięcia guza z resekcją i przeszczepem aorty zakończyła się sukcesem! To były dobre wieści i w końcu nadzieja!
</div>
<div>•	Po operacji: Niestety, powrót do zdrowia po operacji był trudny. Z powodu skomplikowanej operacji pojawiły się problemy z jelitami (przepukliny i niedrożność), wielokrotne wizyty w szpitalu obarczone znowu błędnymi diagnozami stały się znowu dla nas poważnymi zmartwieniami.
</div>
<div>•	Sierpień 2020: Zostały wykryte u Macieja kolejne przerzuty (nowotwory) w płucach, a także inne przerzuty w okolicach odcinka lędźwiowego kręgosłupa. Położenie guza w okolicach kręgosłupa bezpośrednio oddziaływało na rdzeń kręgowy.
</div>
<div>•	Luty 202: Rodzi się czwarte dziecko Aldony i Macieja (obecnie 3 lata), co przyniosło rodzinie wielką radość. Narodziny dziecka były dla pewnego rodzaju odskocznią od ciężkich chwil, które musieli przeżywać.
</div>
<div>•	Marzec 202: Maciej wziął udział w leczeniu eksperymentalnym - immunoterapii w Royal Marsden Hospital. Co tydzień rodzina i przyjaciele poświęcali swój czas, aby wozić Macieja do szpitala, ale też wspierać Aldonę w opiece nad trójką dzieci w tym noworodkiem. Po immunoterapii Maciej czuł się bardzo źle. Aldona opiekowała się wówczas nim i ich dziećmi.
</div>
<div>•	Listopad 202: Przerwano immunoterapię, ponieważ choroba postępowała, a leczenie eksperymentalne nie przynosiło efektów. Wiadomość o braku efektów w leczeniu innowacyjną metodą było dla Aldony i Macieja druzgocącą wiadomością. Wierzyli, że immunoterapia jest światem w tunelu dla Macieja i nadzieją dla ich rodziny.
</div>
<div>•	Listopad 2021: Niestety okazało się, że Maciej ma kolejne przerzuty nowotworowe w okolicach szyi, został poddany kolejnej chemioterapii.
</div>
<div>•	Październik 2022: Choroba nowotworowa w okolicy kręgosłupa postępowała, a Maciej stawał się coraz mniej zdolny do chodzenia. Jego szwagierka pamięta, jak biegła do jego domu, słysząc go wołającego z kuchni: Maciej był zaniepokojony, bo stracił czucie w nogach. Maciej, zawsze starający się chronić Aldonę, twierdził, że jest 'w porządku' i to chwilowe. Niestety, ta "chwila" nadal postępowała, prowadząc do bardziej inwazyjnej operacji.
</div>
<div>•	Listopad 2022: Operacja kręgosłupa L3 w celu złagodzenia ucisku na rdzeń kręgowy w celu zapobieżenia paraliżowi. Ryzyka tej operacji były ogromne, zwłaszcza z uwagi na ryzyko paraliżu po zabiegu, ryzyko powrotu do zdrowia ze względu na jego osłabiony układ odpornościowy i współistniejące nowotwory w płucach i szyi.

<div>•	Styczeń 2023: Rozpoczęcie zażywania współczesnego leku łagodzącego. Próbowano również "medycyny alternatywnej" w postaci diety.
</div>
<div>•	Lipiec 2023: Postęp choroby, dalsza radioterapia odcinka lędźwiowego kręgosłupa.
</div>
<div>•	Wrzesień 2023: Maciej został przyjęty na kolejne badania eksperymentalne w Royal Marsden. Znowu rodzina i przyjaciele pomagali wozić Macieja do szpitala, a Aldona zajmowała się ich dziećmi. Niestety po raz kolejny Maciej po tym leczeniu czuł się bardzo źle.
</div>
<div>•	Listopad 2023: Maciej znowu traci czucie w nogach. Obawy dotyczące dużej inwazyjności nowotworu w okolicach jego kręgosłupa powróciły.
</div>
<div>•	Grudzień 2023: Maciej przechodzi kolejną operację kręgosłupa na odcinku piersiowym (operacja była konieczna z powodu postępu choroby). Kolejny raz podjęto ogromne ryzyko operacyjne – bardzo słaby stan zdrowia Macieja i choroby współistniejące.
</div>
<div>•	24/25 Grudnia 2023: Dzięki wspaniałemu zespołowi lekarzy Maciej został wypisany ze szpitala, aby mógł spędzić Boże Narodzenie z rodziną choć dla Macieja i Aldony były to bolesne, męczące i niepokojące Święta. Od tego czasu stan jego z dnia na dzień mocno się pogarszał.

<div>Luty 2024; Opieka paliatywna w domu, walka o życie!

<div>Maciej przeszedł przez wszystkie możliwe dostępne chemioterapie i radioterapie walcząc o każdą chwilę swojego życia. Badania eksperymentalne, różnego rodzaju diety i operacje stanowiły jedyną iskrę nadziei, choć niestety na krótko. Podczas choroby, w miarę możliwości, Maciej kontynuował pracę, starając się znaleźć cel w życiu, zwłaszcza, że jego zdrowie uniemożliwiało mu bawienie się z dziećmi. Był głównym żywicielem rodziny, a jego żona Aldona, nauczycielka, również była zależna od niego finansowo. Dochód Macieja był kluczowy dla utrzymania rodziny. On sam czuł, że to jego obowiązek utrzymywać rodzinę. Swoja pomocą i zabezpieczaniem rodziny finansowo dziękował za okazaną mu pomoc.

<div>Aldona starała się prowadzić dom i pracować, aby sprostać trudnej sytuacji, jaką niosła diagnoza męża. Teraz, gdy Maciej zbliża się do swoich ostatnich dni życia…, Aldona oddaje się w pełni opiece nad Maciejem w domu. Nie mając już żadnej pomocy finansowej.

<div>Ich czwórka małych dzieci i Aldona są teraz całkowicie zależne od pomocy i wsparcia innych. Patrząc, jak stan Ojca się pogarsza, a rodzina jest już wyczerpana, aż żal serce ściska. Żadna rodzina nie powinna przechodzić przez tyle cierpienia, zwłaszcza młode dzieci, które muszą obserwować, jak ich ojciec słabnie.

<div>Wsparcie finansowe dla tej rodziny, będzie dla nich ogromna ulgą, umożliwiająca im skupienie się na żałobie, a nie na finansowych troskach. Chcielibyśmy również serdecznie podziękować wszystkim, którzy już udzielili wsparcia, w tym rodzinie, przyjaciołom i kapłanom katolickim. Dziękujemy również wspaniałym lekarzom, chirurgom, konsultantom i pielęgniarkom, którzy troszczyli się o Macieja i Aldonę.

Przyszłość przed Aldoną i czwórką ich dzieci, które w tym momencie opłakują stratę ukochanego męża i ojca, staje się trudna i niepewna. Módlmy się wspólnie o siłę i ukojenie dla nich w tym trudnym czasie.
