Ma Gbedey: Down in Cape Town

As many of you know, I surprised my mom with a trip to Cape Town. The purpose was to bring some joy after my father passed last year, and to celebrate what would have been my parents’ 50th Anniversary and my mom’s 75th birthday (both on July 31st, 2018). This was a bucket list trip for her, but instead she nearly kicked the bucket (and isn’t in the clear yet.)
She suffered a subdural hematoma (brain bleed) and has had 2 operations thus far, and nearly a week in the ICU.
Because we are abroad, we are having to pay *everything* up front, and can’t even hope that insurance will cover (some?) costs until after we return to the States.
Long story short, medical expenses alone will be well over $40,000 and could easily be in excess of $100K. (Crazy how a life can be measured by a dollar amount!) In addition to that, I have my 1 and a 1/2 year old son with me, and what turned into a short vacay is looking like it will be at least a month long stay, so I’m trying to cover lodging expenses out of pocket as well.
I’m tryjng not to be ashamed to ask for help, but in this case, I have no clue what else to do. I’m trying to remain strong to be a good mom to my son, and to be a source of positivity, healing, comfort and hope for my mother. That is hard to do when I have the accountants on me and the stress of dealing with finances. (Cue the violins.)
With that said, any and every dime you contribute is so very appreciated. I have no words at this moment to express the gratitude I already feel.
