Surviving for my Sydney

Donation protected
My daughter Sydney was just two years old when in April 2014 I was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Glassy Cell Carcinoma. This type of cancer represents less than 1% of all cervical cancers. I was the first to be treated for Glassy Cell at my regional cancer centre in Oshawa last year. I was treated with both chemotherapy and external and internal radiation therapies. By November 2014 my tumour had shrunk and was no longer visible on MRI, however swollen lymph nodes were detected. As my body had just suffered great trauma, oncologists thought this swelling may be reactive and that the swelling would soon subside. Unfortunately this was not the case and these lymph nodes have been swelling ever since with new leasions being recently discovered.

After being told this past February that my cancer was terminal, my husband and I sought a second opinion from Canada’s leading cancer research center regarding any future treatment. After my case was discussed at a special Tumour Board, it has been decided that more chemotherapy could benefit me, along with six doses of a drug called Avastin. Unfortunately, Avastin is not yet publically funded in Ontario and at a cost of $7200 per dose, with the initial 6 dose treatment plan, it just isn’t financially affordable for us to achieve this on our own.

After years of trying, God finally blessed my husband and I with Sydney with the help of fertility treatment. Sydney is truly a miracle baby! One of my biggest joys and pleasure is checking in on her every night before I go to bed. Making sure she’s comfortable, that the temperature in her room is ok, that her “friends” haven’t fallen out of bed and that her “baby” is near. I don’t even want to think about not being here to see her start school, to graduate, and to start her own life when she’s grown. I want to be here with her. I want to help Scott raise our daughter whom we strived so hard to welcome into our lives. Going through IVF was lonely, exhausting and extremely stressful but it was worth every second, just like fighting this cancer will be!

I love being Sydney’s mom. I love being Scott’s wife. I love being my parent’s daughter and my siblings’ sister. I love my grandma. I love that I have amazing aunts, uncles, cousins, in laws and friends.

Please join us in the fight for my life.

Thank you in advance and God bless,

Lisa, Scott and Sydney Mailman (Chapman)
