A study by Harvard University researchers found that cancer patients who are married have a significantly higher survival rate than their unmarried counterparts.
That's great news. It truly is. I wonder, however, how many couples the Harvard researchers encountered where both the husband and wife were battling the ruthless disease.
Probably none. I mean, what are the odds, right?
I'd like to introduce you to a couple I know. A very special couple - PJ and David, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law.
In December 2011, PJ was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. In 2012, she underwent chemotherapy and multiple surgeries. Throughout 2013, she fought and clawed her way back. She regained her energy - slowly but surely and day after neverending day. She grew her hair back and stored the hats and scarves back on the forgotten closet shelves where they belong. By the beginning of 2014, she had started to reclaim her life.
She had won. They - PJ and David - had won. Or so it seemed.
In December 2014, David was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. In the brief time since his diagnosis, David has already been through too many procedures and chemotherapy treatments for me to count. He's shed far too many pounds, far too quickly.
I guess the treatments destroy your tastebuds. And the lack of taste destroys your appetite. All of this while what your body needs most of all is fuel to fight the relentless onslaught of attacking cells.
PJ and David used to come over to eat or go out to dinner with us just about every week. Since Thanksgiving, David has only felt good enough to visit our house twice.
I don't know why this beast of a disease has chosen both PJ and David in such a short time, but I do know that Cancer doesn't just attack the body. It also seems to have a way of confounding insurance coverage and devouring savings and retirement accounts. Expenses for PJ's follow-up care continue while the added costs of David's treatments are stretching their insurance far beyond its limits.
