Help me keep my children!

Last year in August I got a call from CPS saying that I need to come and pick up my children from their mothers house. I have shared joint custody with my ex-wife since 2012 but now because of the CPS case against my exwife, I now have emergency sole custody.
This all started when my ex-wife's boyfriend moved in with her and our children. (She already lived with her mother, and step father, her daughter, and our 3 kids....) He moved in with all of them ALONG with his 3 kids, so then there were 11 people living in her mothers house....then she had 2 more children with him. Peyton, my youngest was sleeping in a twin bed with a teenage girl and Dalton was sleeping on the couch. He didn't even have a bed to sleep in.
So we found out a few days later that the reason CPS removed them was because Jerry, her boyfriend, sexually assaulted her oldest daughter. Also, there was a report against my ex-wife for beating my son, who has ADHD and a learning disability, with a belt so bad he had black and blue welts all down the backs of his legs. Shortly after I picked up my children, I petitioned the court and they granted me sole custody. For the last 6 months, she has paid no child support and only had supervised visitation. I don't care if she ever pays support, I just want my kids to be safe.
A little history on Dalton...he is so smart but nobody has ever taken the time to really help him but to just "push" him through the system. He is almost 13 in 6th grade and can barely add 3 + 1. Upon getting him into a new school and finding out that the last time his IEP was updated was in 1st grade!! I have no idea what has happened with my son for so long because my ex-wife would give me no information about my kids. She even went so far to give the schools her boyfriends name as the "father", so I can't even access any of my own kids records. Now that he is on a new IEP plan, he is excelling and even has a B in science! We are making so much progress to where he is actually participating in school, and opening up for the 1st time!
When I discuss the kids progress with my ex-wife, she has said flat out, she doesn't care about that, she just wants the kids back to her mother's house because she needs the child support. That is what her kids mean to her, they are income...I am not by any means trying to keep them from her....I have offered her joint custody with me having physical custody and that is not enough for her.
My main concern at this point is their safety and well-being. Her boyfriend is living 4 miles away from her house with her aunt and they just took a trip together for a family funeral! This is the man that just sexually assaulted her daughter!
I am scared for my kids to go back there for several reasons. I have no choice but to retain an attorney but I don't have as much as I will need and we are going to be going to trial soon. I have no choice but to ask for help, they are the most important thing in my life. This is the hardest thing for me to do, I'm not one to ask for help like this but I don't know what else to do.
