Little Ella was born pre-term at 30 weeks in Nairobi, far from her big brothers and family in Nakuru and Australia.
Tammi, Ella’s mum is a friend of mine and they are facing losing their home which was placed against the growing Neonatal Intensive Care Medical bill which was required to save Ella’s life.
Ella was initially ventilated, and received blood transfusions and many other tests and medications. The cost of this adds up quickly.
Ella has now been transferred to a hospital closer to home that is cheaper, however she still struggles to put on the weight she needs. Born at 1.36kg, Ella is now 19 days old and 1.4kg.
Ella’s big sister Layla was also born prematurely and sadly grew her angel wings much too soon. As you can imagine, so much rides on this little girl’s fight to survive.
Having been to Kenya many times and being a mum and midwife, I know when a family needs a little extra hand. I have just finished a tour of Central America where maternal and neonatal statistics are grim......together we CAN make a difference.
Living in Australia is something I am very grateful for and our access to hygienic world class health care.
If you can give up your takeaway coffee this week or hold a bake sale at work or school, I urge you to make a donation of any size to ensure this little girl has a home to go to after her long journey in hospital.
