Prom She Never Had

McKensie is a 20 year old young lady with a very rare and life-threatening disease, called Congenital Myasthenic Syndrome, from Salem, Oregon. This disease causes grave muscle weakness, and only two others in the world have her form of this disease. McKensie has a trachestomy and uses a ventilator to breathe, cannot walk and uses a power wheelchair for all mobility, has nurses and caregivers to help care for her every day and night, has medications and treatments at least every three hours around the clock, and her home resembles a hospital and therapy center combined. McKensie has been hospitalized 112 times to date, mostly because of respiratory distress and respiratory failure. Despite all of this, she is a caring, smart, loving person who graduated from high school (via a tutor working with the teachers at her local high school) at the top of her class, and loves art, music and her three dogs and two cats. McKensie lives in her parent's handicapped accessible home with her twin sister and older brother.

McKensie met Alex, from Auburn, Georgia, via a family game on-line in 2010. They quickly hit it off, and became "boyfriend and girlfriend." Alex is a smart, kind, talented and patient young man who likes music, reading, art and going to church activities. Alex has been out to Oregon to visit McKensie the last two summers, and in the summer of 2014, they fell even more in-love.

Alex asked McKensie to his Senior prom, which is on April 4th, 2015. McKensie happily accepted. This means that McKensie will have to travel from Oregon to Georgia and back for the event. Because McKensie must travel with a very large amount of medical equipment, medical supplies, medication, oxygen, her 500 pound wheelchair, and also a nurse/caregiver team, taking a plane there and back is impossible. So, McKensie and her 'team' must drive the family's wheelchair van the 6,200 mile round trip from Oregon to Georgia and back- making McKensie's dream prom trip a very expensive adventure. McKensie's frail health also makes this a huge challenge. We will do anything in our power to make this possible for McKensie. Let's send mckensie to prom!
