Luka’s Surgery

Donation protected

For those that don’t know, we (myself, Kaitlyn and Patrick) have an 8 month old Alaskan Malamute named Luka. He is usually our very high energy, gentle giant, but about 4 days ago we noticed that he had become very ill. He had thrown up some toy stuffing (of course) overnight, which we thought was semi-normal for a puppy that tends to eat all the things he shouldn’t. His illness quickly got worse though when he then threw up all of his dog food from the past few days, only within a mere hours of the first scenario. From there we noticed that he would not go near his food anymore and any attempt we made at helping him eat would end in him throwing up that food as well (chicken, rice, hamburger, scrambled egg). We took him to our vet after about 48 hours of this, but they’re tests resulted in no news. They performed X-rays and blood work, which both came back clear. They gave him fluids and anti-nausea meds, which seemed to help his energy levels, so we were hopeful.

We followed their advice and waited a few hours before trying with food again. He unfortunately wanted no part in it. Sniffing the food and walking away. Still barely drinking his water. All we could do was continue monitoring him and hope that he could just keep their fluids down. That unfortunately wasn’t the case, since he ended up throwing it all up the next day. Our vet recommended we take him to an emergency clinical that could provide him with 24 hour care, as our vet did not offer that service. We were able to take him in immediately to the emergency clinical where he had to undergo more X-rays and an ultrasound. It was with those exams that they found a large obstruction in his small intestine.

We had to have surgery performed right away, as the item was too large for him to be able to pass it on his own. That was yesterday. He is still currently at the clinic, being watched over by an amazing team of doctors and technicians that are making sure he’s recovering well. If all goes well we will be able to pick him up tomorrow, which is the bright side of this story! The downside being however that these exams and surgery had to be paid immediately out of pocket, which we now have to pay back to the credit card provider. We unfortunately had no other choice, as we couldn’t wait any longer with our boy in pain.

The cost of Lukas surgery and aftercare will and already has put an extreme financial burden on us, with coronavirus either putting us out of work or taking significant pay cuts. Any amount would extremely helpful as we work to pay these bills as fast as we can. We are so appreciative of all the people willing to help out our lovable boy. We just want to see him back to his normal crazy self. Thank you!
