Let’s build a school!

Donation protected
I am a trustee for www.changinglivesmalawi.com .
We support approx 800 orphans and vulnerable children in rural Northern Malawi.

There are not enough secondary school places so, even though young people pass their primary school leavers exams, if they are not picked for a place at secondary school they cannot go. They end up back in primary school, repeating a year, hoping to get picked the year after. It’s heartbreaking for them when they are working so hard. They know education is their only way out of poverty and malnutrition.

Despite having sponsors to pay their secondary school fees, this is what happened to eleven sponsored children this year. What happens if the don’t get a place next year?

If young people are selected for a place at secondary school they have to be a boarder as it’s too far away to walk each day. This adds a huge amount to the cost of schooling.

Lots of the young people have said they want a school in their village. That way they can still help care for elderly relatives and help with chores while being at secondary school. It also means that all children who pass their primary school leavers exams will have a place at school in their village. Education is everything to these young people.

Please help me raise money to build a school and enable all children in Ibuluma villages, rural Northern Malawi to have a better future.

Approximately 500 orphans and young people are fed a nutritious and substantial meal each weekend. This is their one proper meal of the week. It’s not good enough but all we can afford to provide currently. There are no big agencies feeding children in this area. All are malnourished but teachers are already noticing that children are concentrating better at school and their grades are improving because of this one meal each week.

The nearest secondary school is over 20km away which, as I mentioned, is too far to walk there and back each day. The primary school children are walking at least 5km to school and 5km back each day, some having had no food at all that day.

I propose, for the month of May, to raise awareness of the plight of these hundreds of malnourished children.

1. Due to mobility issues I cannot walk far but I can ride my exercise bike. So I intend to cycle 10km each day to represent these children, from 6 years old, having to walk 10km a day for their education.

2. To raise awareness of the lack of food these children have I intend to eat one bowl of rice (instead of maize flour) and one bowl of vegetables/salad each day for the month of May. I am very aware that this is still far more than the children have… they only get this once a week, not every day!

So I am asking for donations towards a school please, to improve the futures of hundreds of children. It will also provide employment within the village. We’ve already sent hundreds of books to improve literacy levels.

Can you donate money towards building a school? Can you sponsor my challenge? Can you do a challenge of your own? Can you help spread the word. Can you help us continue Changing Lives Malawi?
