Edit 6/29/17: This fundraiser has been active for more than 2 years now. During that time I have exceeded my initial goal. Unfortunately you can't put a limit on cancer, so I am updating my goal to reflect my continuing need. In April 2014, after being at my new job as a Social Worker for the State for less than a year, I was diagnosed with Stage IIIc Melanoma. By June, I was Stage IV with a brain tumor. Being new at my job, I didn't have a lot of leave time built up, so I quickly used that up and I began to have to take Leave Without Pay to go to doctor appointments, get treatments, and deal with the side effects of the treatments. Currently, I am on extended Leave Without Pay. I recently found out that my cancer is spreading, despite the treatments, so when my FMLA runs out, I will likely have to go on long-term disability, cutting my monthly income by more than half. I have done everything I can do to reduce my monthly expenses, I got deferment on my student loans, I tried to get a debt consolidation loan to pay off my other debt, but to no avail. All the while, my medical bills are piling up and I am getting further and further behind. To make matters worse, when I get approved for disability, I won't start receiving monthly benefits for the first 6 months. That means I will have ZERO income for 6 whole months. My goal of five thousand dollars is NOT enough to cover my expenses for 6 months, but it's a start. ANY amount donated will be appreciated more than you know!! UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has contributed. I left my job at the State in October, and am now on SSI Disability. However, what I receive in benefits monthly doesn't begin to cover my expenses. I am scheduled to begin radiation tomorrow, and have lots of scans and doctor's appointments in the works. With my disability not enough to cover my regular bills, it's certainly not enough to pay my medical bills. Any amount you can spare would be greatly appreciated.
