Annie's ACL Surgery

Hi everyone! My name is Annie...I'm the furry one. Although I now live in the Dirty Durham, I used to live in Virginia Beach. For several years, I lived with a family that included several young kids and lots and lots and lots of other dogs. I was definitely loved by this family because they taught me, according to one of my foster moms, "good manners." My foster mom wasn't quite sure why or how things changed (and I really don't like thinking about it), but, at some point, I was basically kicked out of the house. My foster mom thought that it may have happened because my original family fell on hard times. Whatever the reason, I went to live in a ditch and was scared to death. Luckily, after about six months, a really nice woman finally coaxed me out of the ditch and got me hooked up with Southeastern German Shephard Rescue (a fabulous rescue group for anyone looking for great dogs, great foster families, and a wonderful support network). Although the rescue group found my original family, they surrendered me. Then, I went to live with a foster family that included a human family and several other dogs. My foster mom took me to the vet who quickly saw that I had major ACL damage in one of my back legs. Nevertheless, my foster mom felt sure I would get adopted quickly.
After I became "available," my new family quickly responded and answered my ad less than an hour after my picture showed up on Facebook. A week later, my new humans drove up to Virginia Beach to see me. At that first meet & greet, my foster mom told the family about the ACL injury and the need for surgery. Although the family really liked me, they were really concerned about the surgery and decided to think about it. However, it wasn't but a day or two later after the family couldn't stop thinking about me that one of the humans decided to call in sick to work and drive up to get me to see how I liked living with them. I guess my new mom decided that every dog has medical issues that are going to arise and that, in this case, we just happen to know what mine is. Before picking me up, my new mom called around to see how much ACL surgeries cost...they can run anywhere from $1000 to upward of $2000 depending on the extent of the damage and the dog. I guess my new mom just knew that I would love living with my two sisters (one human, one dog) and brother (human but he really acts more like a dog). It took me a little while to transition because I got really nervous when everyone would leave. However, I've started to realize that when the people leave, the house definitely feels quieter and I can get a little rest. When the two human siblings are around, you will often find them on me, beside me, feeding me (keep this information quiet if you don't mind), and just hanging out. They've even tried to get me in the bathtub with them...My furry sister is now my best friend. We love wrestling, snuggling, howling at any passing amulances and police cars, giving the Fed-ex man hell, and barking at the neighbor dog who runs up and down our fence. All in all, I am happy and sweet girl who is sometimes a little too smart for my own good!
Now, we just need to get my ACL fixed so that we can do all the fun things we want to like going to the Eno River, swimming in lakes, and, simply because I love being with my people, going everywhere with them (I've been promised a trip to the food truck rodeo).
After visiting several vets here, it became clear that since I am a "Ferrari-type" of dog (as you can probably see from my picture), I need my surgery done by a board-certified specialist. Luckily, we found one I like (well, I don't really like it but the people are very kind) in Durham. After I got x-rayed (which I really didn't like), it looks like the damage is bad, but could be much, much worse. So, the deal is I need this surgery sooner rather than later. My new mom is fully committed to doing the surgery regardless of how this campaign goes, but, since it will all certainly be on credit, she was hoping for any help possible. All money will be used to help offset the cost of surgery...if anyone is uncomfortable giving through GFM, donations can also be made directly to the vet's office: Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital in Durham (http://www.tvrhdurham.com/)
