Ray Hansmann's Lung Transplant Fund

Donation protected
My Dad, Ray Hansmann, has had a long history of lung problems but never smoked a day in his life. He worked in a fiber glass company for 25 years and has had about 5-6 cases of pneumonia in his life. The combination of the two has caused his lungs to deteriorate over the years.  He hasn't been able to work for many years and only receives disability income. About a year ago, he was told he had possible AFib (Atrial Fibrillation) and saw a specialist who put him on a new combination of medication. Shortly after starting the medication, my Dad's lung collapsed and he was admitted to the hospital. We believe the medication had side effects that impacted his current condition of his lungs. His lungs and his ability to breathe had taken a serious turn for the worse and had not improved. After a few subsequent trips to the ER and ICU, he was told he needed a bilateral lung transplant, or double lung transplant. Today, he currently uses 10% of his lung capacity while sitting down and doing nothing. If he walks around, it drops to 3%. He has to be on oxygen 24/7 now. Doctors say, if he doesn't get the lung transplant, he won't have much time left.

My Dad and Stepmom were in Dallas doing numerous tests to get put on the transplant list.  At the beginning of December 2014, my Stepmom lost her job of 18 years. This was incredibly devastating for our family. We felt in our hearts that my Dad's condition and constant doctors visits caused her to lose her job. Ultimately, my Dad and Stepmom moved back to Seguin, TX. After many many prayers, my Stepmom was able to get another job a couple of weeks ago. My parents are currently paying $1200 per month for COBRA insurance until the new insurance is available and effective. We know the transplant will have substantial out-of-pocket costs despite having insurance and we want to help my Dad as much as we can with the costs associated with his transplant. My stepmom will also need to be out of work for a considerable amount of time during my Dad's testing, surgery, and recovery. Our family has really stepped up to the plate and helped out when they can. We take what life has to give us and try to make the best out of our situation. My Dad is so blessed by family and friends in his life. We know we wouldn't be where we are now without any of them.

Thank you to everyone in advance for taking the time to read my Dad's story and for your generosity, thoughts, and prayers. Any help is greatly appreciated and it will truly make a difference for my Dad and Stepmom.
