Luwatala Learning

A primary school without books.
Everything learnt by heart. It is amazing but it could be so much better with a few resources.
Mpata Primary School is in the Luwatala Valley surrounded by mountains, just south of Zomba. It is hard to get to, no cars, no electricity - definitely no internet. I got there by invitation from the local church. Like many schools it is too remote to receive much mainstream Aid. There are 368 learners age 6 -  15 yrs who have this one chance at an education. I went into Zione's classroom which has 65 children learning off a blackboard. They need books.
The community have made bricks for a library by hand, they just don't have the money to assemble it. Malawi National Library will give them free books from BookAid if they can get the library built. New books every year - but the library must come first. It just takes cement, timber, materials for a roof and shelving for the books themselves. The community are ready to provide most of the labour to build it.

We have sent secondhand books from Stow- Heriot (Scottish Borders).  I have sent money for some resources and text books but a library is beyond me! This is an area of subsistence farming, not a cash economy.  The money must come from outside - and what a wonderful thing it would be to bring an education to some of Malawi's poorest who are so eager to learn.

Money will be spent on additional construction materials for a small library, shelves for books, security door, desks and chairs. Text books and library membership. BookAid have confirmed that the school will then receive free books each year to stock the library. Construction of the library can begin as soon as basic materials like cement and timber can be bought, most building should be completed in the dry months April - October.
