Lutzie 43 Distracted Driving Virtual 5K

The Town of Bluffton, along with the Bluffton Police Department, and the Lutzie 43 Foundation will be hosting its 2nd annual Lutzie 43 Virtual 5K. Due to COVID-19, this year's race will be a little different. We are asking everyone to participate from your neighborhood, trail or backyard to maintain social distancing.
This year's race will be Saturday, August 1 at 8:30 a.m. There is no registration fee, but we ask that you donate as much or as little as you can. All money raised will go towards providing students scholarships to a higher educational college, university or vocational program.
The Lutzie 43 Foundation was formed after the death of former Auburn University football player Phillip Lutzenkirchen. He died in a distracted driving motor vehicle accident in 2014. His jersey number was 43. Mike Lutzenkirchen, founder and CEO of the foundation, visited Bluffton in April 2019 to share his story with students at Bluffton High School, May River High School, the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), and at a joint press conference.
Inspired by the legacy of Philip, the Lutzie 43 Foundation started the 43 key seconds initiative with a goal of creating the first nationally-recognized symbol for distracted and impaired driving. This is accomplished through the 43 key seconds key, which serves as a physical reminder for young drivers to take 43 seconds to prioritize safety behind the wheel. The 43 Key Seconds key reminds you to take 43 seconds to ensure you have a clear head, clear hands, clear eyes and click it before turning the key.
In May 2020, the Town of Bluffton awarded three local students with $1,000 each, from money raised in last year's race, as well as from other donations provided throughout the year.
