Saving Sweet Luna

Luna was recently adopted from the Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS). When Luna came into the ACPS, she was a stray that looked to have been bred for puppies, abused, 10 pounds underweight, missing teeth, and was diagnosed with heartworm. Despite her condition, Luna is sweet, playful, and incredibly personable; she certainly enjoys her toys, her new adoptive family, and lounging on the porch enjoying the cooler weather. Despite her obvious mistreatment, Luna was adopted with a brand new lease on life. Yet, her fight is not over.
Heartworm is a difficult disease for dogs, especially when left untreated, such as in Luna’s case. The disease is causing havoc on Luna’s body, especially her lungs and heart. While she has been treated properly for heartworm prior to adoption, the combination of timing of her spay and heartworm treatment, along with her being underweight, has pushed Luna into a state where she is not eating, becoming dehydrated, and where her lungs are filling with fluid. Coughing and difficult to breathe, Luna has become lethargic, losing her normal perkiness and lively personality.
As it became more and more difficult to care for her at home – from giving her medication, as well as feeding her, to ensuring she gets enough liquids – Luna has been brought to the Affiliated Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Jacksonville for hospitalization. Currently, Luna is on a constant IV with fluids and medication; our goal is to reduce the amount of fluid in her lungs, keep her hydrated, and ensure she gets the nutrition she needs to heal. With the current treatment plan, it is a waiting game. In addition, there is a very real chance that she may develop a complication (such as a blood clot), which would be fatal.
It is our hope that she is able to make it through this tough time, as she certainly deserves a better life than what she was in prior to being found and adopted. She has a family that loves and cares for her, and she certainly does deserve a new lease on life. It may be hard, and there is the fact that even should she recover – she will have some form of canine asthma for the remainder of her adult life.
The goal here is to use any funds raised to help pay for Luna’s hospital stay, no matter how long it may be. Currently, Friends of Jacksonville Animals (a non-profit in Jacksonville) is providing much-needed support during this difficult time, inclusive of being able to help with some of the costs as well as moral and emotional support. Any funds raised will first go to paying for Luna’s hospital bills, and should any funds remain, will be donated directly to Friends of Jacksonville Animals (FOJA), even should Luna pass away. FOJA has been fantastic in supporting Luna’s return to health, and is a fantastic organization to work with. Donating any remaining funds would simply be the responsible thing to do, as FOJA could then help another animal – and possibly their family – in need.
