<div>This January carries a double significance: it marks two years since Lulu’s accident, and one year since he arrived in Kunming, China, to begin what has become an intense and deeply committed rehabilitation journey. Within his very first month there, he underwent a third major surgical procedure on his cervical spine to remove scar tissue and inject stem cells into the affected area.

<div>After several weeks of painful recovery, he started physical rehabilitation alongside monthly stem cell injections. However, after a few months with no visible results and very high costs, Lulu made the difficult decision to discontinue the stem cell treatment.
</div>

<div>With this decision came an unexpected new opportunity. Through a fellow rehabilitation patient, Lulu learned about a medical trial involving an epidural stimulator. Doctors from a hospital in Hangzhou traveled to Kunming to examine him and approved his participation, making him the third person in the world to join this study.

<div>Lulu and his father relocated to Hangzhou, where he underwent his second surgery in China to implant a spinal electro-stimulation device on his lumbar spine to support muscle activation and movement in his legs.

<div>While there has not yet been a dramatic breakthrough such as clear, intentional leg movements, meaningful improvements are visible. Lulu has gained greater muscle strength; experiences less dizziness when standing or exerting himself; and is no longer suffering from decubitus (pressure) wounds that previously set back his rehabilitation in Germany.

<div>Life in China has brought both hope and hardship. Cultural shock and language barriers have been challenging, yet Lulu is deeply grateful for access to such intensive and specialized rehabilitation. His daily therapy includes standing exercises, assisted walking, physical therapy, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, and acupuncture, many of which were limited or unavailable to him in Germany.

<div>Although he misses his friends, his home, and his beloved cat, Lulu believes continuing this immersive therapy offers his best chance at progress, and he remains determined to keep going. Every session, every exercise, and every day of therapy brings him closer to regaining independence.
