Lili'uolani Takes Over Europe

I am not the victim of an accident or disease, nor am I trying to save a home or a life. I am simply an aspiring student designer in the pursuit of improving my thoughts, perspective, and life through the arts.
Most people live their lives never knowing their passion or purpose. I can honestly say, at twenty-one years old, that I am lucky to know mine and have them be one in the same. During my time at Cornish College of the Arts, I have little wonderful moments where I realize, despite my many interests, that art and design have been my constant companions since infancy, foreshadowing my life’s purpose as a maker.
Studying in Amsterdam and Rome presents the opportunity for me to reach further into my creative roots and take advantage of experiences that will direct and develop the skills I need to become an exceptional designer.

AMSTERDAM | June 15-22
For ten days, I have the opportunity to be immersed in design culture and practices with amazing professors and a handful of classmates. We will be touring studios, museums and schools, as well as meeting with prominent and influential designers.
From these experiences, I believe that I will gain a more dynamic understanding of design than what could be extracted from the classroom. My hope is that this knowledge will contribute to my quality of work and proficiency as a (fledgling) designer.
ROME | June 24-21
This University of Washington study abroad program is a month long art history and studio intensive. Visits to different sites, monuments, and museums have been carefully arranged as our morning exercise. Afternoons will be filled with learning and experimenting with different mediums and focusing on our independent study project.
My goal during this time is to study and explore the concept of patronage in the arts, which you are helping me with right now! All the great Italian masters we know today had patrons and were taken in by the Medici family. Would they have been masters of their craft without this help? It's a concept I find interesting and it affects the relationship between the creator and the creation. There's definitely a lot to explore here.

I am asking for $10,000 out of my total cost of $15,698. During this time, I will be on my best behavior and saving up as well. The most I can save will be about $2500. Unfortunately, I am ineligable for financial aid from my school and already have a personal loan out, so I'm placing my hope in scholarships and you! Thank you!
