Lucas Lindner Spinal Injury Fund

Hello,

My name is Lucas Lindner and on the morning of May 15th of 2016 in Campbellsport, WI I was ejected from a truck I was driving after tying to avoid a deer and the front passenger tire blew out. I suffered a spinal cord injury beginning C5. As a result I became a C5-C8 quadriplegic. I was flown on a flight for life to Froedtert & MCW hospital in Milwaukee, WI in critical condition. I woke up from the coma on May 17th and could only feel my shoulders and move my upper arms. Initially I was told that recovery would be very unlikely and to plan for the worst, however later the same day I was offered an experimental state of the art procedure which I immediately accepted! The experimental treatment was given to me courtesy of The Medical College of Wisconsin and a new company named Asterias Biotherapeutics, it involved the transplant of 10 million stem cells in my spinal cord. I was the second person ever to get this new procedure that was given on June 1st (almost 2 weeks after my injury). About 2 weeks after the transplant I started noticing improvements that started with getting sensation in my left and right thumb and index finger and progressed to the rest of my upper limbs! Over the next six months the recovery was very rapid. Things slowed but by February 4th of 2017 I was finally diagnosed as paraplegic things have been getting better, albeit slowly, ever since. Today I am able to type, assist (and mostly complete) in all the necessities of daily life, use a self-propelled wheel chair, and use my phone as well as before my injury and completely on my own. I ask for assistance finically to be able to buy a self-propelled wheel chair and a vehicle that would be adapted to my needs as both are now completely possible even though just over a year ago I was told to never expect to be self sufficient ever again. Today I live in a somewhat rural area of Wisconsin in the small town of Eden. Since the accident I have had to move back home with the help and care of my very loving grandparents, Dave and Karen Long. They raised me together since I was the age of 2 after my mother was left alone with my father passing in a plane crash. The injury I have has been extremely burdensome both financially and physically to them and all of my family. I am very blessed to have such caring family even though since last May they have been stretched to the near breaking point supporting my recovery. I was working and going to college locally at Moraine Park for IT system management. I will be able to easily get back to school and follow what I have always loved doing, I just need help getting back to that point. Any contribution you can make to help me and my family get back to a normal successful life would be helpful and appreciated beyond belief. God bless you and I thank you so, so much for your time and any contribution you could make that would help us get back to the life we pursued.

Sincerely,
Lucas Lindner
