Luis and Susan's Kidney Kampaign

It’s Official!  July 6th is the date!  For those of you who may not know, I found out within the last couple of years that I am in need of a kidney transplant. I have a condition called Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). This condition is the most common kidney ailment there is and often goes undiagnosed or without affecting one’s life expectancy.  Unfortunately, my kidney function has dropped to 19%, which is considered kidney failure.  This is a genetic disorder, so family members cannot be donors but I'm grateful for their support.  Fortunately, I also have some really amazing friends. I’ve had people volunteer to be tested for eligibility and it all came down to one man.  Let me tell you about Luis Arroyo.

A hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. Luis would be embarrassed by such an acknowledgement, which is why I want you to know about him. Luis and I met through my husband, Michael.  Luis is a man who is passionate about helping others, which is evident by his 20 years of service in the United States Air Force and his other acts of good deeds.   When he heard that I was in need of a kidney and had a rare blood type his response was “hey, that’s my blood type…..I’ll give her one of my kidneys!”

Luis has graciously and selflessly agreed to be my living donor.  This means that he will undergo elective surgery with me on July 6th and donate one of his kidneys to me. A kidney is a vital organ to human life. How do you ever repay someone for that kind of gift?  “Thank you” does not begin to describe the depth of my appreciation and gratitude for such a gift.  It truly is the gift of life and a second chance. He is donating because he is an unbelievably caring person and has a huge heart.  He is not seeking any acknowledgement, reward, or financial gain in doing this.

Many of you have asked and offered to help and I have finally figured out how you can.  I have set up a GoFundMe to help Luis and his family while he is unable to work.

Anything you can give is appreciated, even if it is just words of encouragement.  Again, our plan is that these funds are used while Luis is recovering…..that’s it.  Nothing extra or a windfall, just enough so Luis does not incur financial hardship while giving of himself so selflessly.
