Lucy's Mast Cell Tumor Removal

A few months ago, we noticed a lump on Lucy's side. It was hard to the touch, and raw on the outside. Unfortunately, a biopsy revealed it to be a Mast Cell Tumor (MCT), a type of cancer that affects the body's response to allergens and inflammation. MCT is the most common skin tumor in dogs, and can also affect other areas of the body, including the spleen, liver, gastrointestinal tract, and bone marrow.

We met with an oncologist and got an estimate for surgery, but with only one source of income at the moment, we left the office feeling pretty hopeless. At that point in time, the MCT was small, so we had some time to figure things out. 

Fast forward to October 5. The tumor quadrupled in size in the span of a day, and was covered in bloody ulcers. We made a trip to the after-hours emergency vet where they cleaned up the wound and prescribed meds.

A follow-up with our vet the next day resulted in a 3-day vet stay for observation and tests. Unfortunately, the skin around her tumor became necrotic, and they had to cut a piece of it, leaving an exposed, open wound that we now have to pack and bandage several times a day. 

The GOOD news is that an ultrasound showed that the cancer has NOT spread to her organs! Yay!!!

The BAD news is that surgery needs to happen immediately.
