Lucy's Comfort Kits for Kids

Donation protected
My name is Lucy and for my Bat Mitzvah, I’m doing a project to help children in one of the poorest urban communities in our country, right here in NYC.

Lincoln Hospital is a public hospital located in the South Bronx, in the 15th congressional district, the poorest in country, where 36.2% of people and 48% of children live below the federal poverty level. For context, the poverty rate in NYC is 14.1%. The South Bronx has the highest rate of families dependant on food stamps, highest number of families living in homeless shelters, the lowest math and reading test scores in the city, the lowest high school graduation rate.  The area also has the highest number of cases of child abuse or neglect in NYC.

The Lincoln Hospital Child Advocacy Center (directed by Dr. Nina Agrawal) cares for children  when there is suspicion of abuse or neglect. The staff includes doctors, social workers, and nurses, who do everything they can to make the children’s experience as warm and non-traumatic as possible.

Recently they examined an 11-year-old girl who had been abused and placed in the foster care system. When asked what she most wanted, the girl said “to be safe” and for school supplies. The staff helped provide the girl with her school supplies and some clothing for school.

I am raising money to purchase backpacks filled with comforting items (blankets, books) and school supplies for 100 children.

This project is important to me because just a few minutes away from where I live, it’s like a whole different country with people who face challenges that we never come into contact with. I also feel that children should always feel safe and protected. When I met with Dr. Agrawal, we discussed the importance of a child having something soft and comforting to hold onto.

I hope that you can help me help brighten these children’s day a little bit. According to Jewish tradition, I suggest donations of $18.
