Cambodia & Thailand Volunteering

Lucy and Serena's Volunteering

The projects organised by Reach Out Volunteers help change the lives of many communities that are weak and poverty-stricken and animals who are sick or mistreated.

Although their economy has developed heavily in recent decades, Cambodia still remains one of the world’s poorest countries.  Most of Cambodia’s residents have very limited access to basic healthcare, safe food and drinking water, and their life expectancy is just 68, one of the lowest in the world.  Many innocent people in Cambodia suffer from severe disabilities that they do not receive adequate treatment for.  One in five of these disabilities are due to past conflicts in Cambodia such as war or injury from landmines.  During our visit, we will be volunteering with the local villagers in Cambodia.  We will be building homes for poor families, classrooms for impoverished schools and teaching children basic English.

Although there were 100,000 elephants in Thailand a century ago, the population of elephants in the wild has dropped to an estimated 2,000. A multitude of species including the Asian Elephants are being pushed closer and closer to extinction as their habitats are clear-cut for commercial logging and agriculture. Here, we will be working with the local Gwi community to build an economically responsible and sustainable project for elephants who were formerly used in logging and street tourism. We will be performing basic health checks, bathing the elephants in the river and giving them healthy food to keep them strong, as well as being involved with the local school and monastery. Mahouts who exploit elephants for riding and shows feel this is their strongest method of income in order to support their families. This project will help offer these people alternative forms of employment to ensure safety to the elephants and support for mahout families.

We feel so proud to be volunteering with such a great cause but we need your help to make it happen. These welfare projects take place throughout the year but unfortunately, they need help with funding. Reach Out Volunteers are a non-profit organisation and a registered charity, so 100% of every donation goes directly to their projects.  We will be paying for our own flights and living costs, as well as any extra activities we choose to do when we're out there.

To raise money for our volunteering, we will be doing a 5k Santa Fun Run in Birmingham on the 2nd of December. Considering we get out of breath walking up the stairs in our house, the 5k run will be a struggle (especially in the Santa suits we'll be wearing!). Every donation made through the GoFundMe page will go towards our volunteering programme. On the day of the run, we will also be donating £40 to Acorns Children’s Hospice who helped make the Santa Fun Run possible. Any donations, big or small, will help a great deal. Thank you!
