If you would like to make a memorial gift to honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Lucio B. Mutia, we invite you to do so here. Your gift will help Rev. Lucio’s family offset his final medical and funeral expenses. Any donations received in excess of these immediate needs will be donated to students in financial need at the Silliman University Divinity School to support the education of the next generation of chaplains and pastoral leaders.

Lucio's Story
The Rev. Dr. Lucio B. Mutia’s story began in 1938 on a farm in the small town of Bato, Plaridel, Misamis Occidental in Mindanao, where Lucio was the youngest of nine children. At age 14, with the adventurous spirit that would characterize his whole life, Lucio set out into the world, in the hope of pursuing an education. Through the grace of God and generosity of strangers, Lucio landed at Silliman University where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity. Upon graduation he set out to serve as a pastor in Calamba, Misamis Occidental, where he met and married the love of his life, Florencia Lacia. Lucio then moved to serve a few more UCCP churches in Mindanao while slowly growing their family, and eventually returning to Silliman University where they continued their ministries as a professor of Philosophy & Religion (Lucio) and elementary school teacher (Flor) and raised their four sons. In the process he also earned M.Th and Th.D degrees. Always as eager to learn as he was to serve, Lucio traveled for a year to the USA in 1986 to further his studies in Clinical Pastoral Education. In 1991 Lucio and Flor moved to Richmond, VA where Lucio served as a CPE supervisor at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia. Shortly thereafter he planted a new UCC church congregation to serve the Filipino American immigrant community in Richmond. Lucio served as the pastor of the Asian American United Church of Christ in Richmond until 2009 when his heart called him back to his homeland and the university that had played such an important role in forming him as a Christian, as a pastor, as a scholar, and as a teacher. Lucio spent his final years serving as the professor of chaplaincy at Silliman University Divinity School and directing the Clinical Pastoral Education program. When the coronavirus pandemic forced the world into lockdown in Spring of 2020, Lucio was delighted to discover that he could continue his teaching ministry from home, even as his energy and health began to slowly decline.
In late April 2021 Lucio was admitted to Silliman University Hospital. On May 1st, Lucio ended the earthly chapter of his life, as he drew his last breath and his spirit embarked on another new adventure, born on the wings of the prayers and songs of the many family members who gathered at his hospital bedside via Zoom. Lucio’s story continues in the stories of the many students he taught, the chaplains and pastors he mentored, the church members he counseled and led, and the family he loved so dearly. His story is now part of our story.
