Lucien's (flower) Power Chair Fund

Goal: To raise £1100 for an electric wheelchair and funds for adjustments and support.

Hello wonderful humans! I’m asking for your help and support to buy my own electric wheelchair.

For those who don’t know me, my name’s Lucien and I’m a 24-year-old writer and artist with an excessive love of ferrets, cats, houseplants and crochet. I'm also chronically ill, autistic, and in need of a power chair.

As a few of you may know, just two weeks after I completed my MA and finished my first novella, my kneecaps suddenly started sliding out of place. I rapidly became unable to walk without risking frequent subluxations or dislocations in my knees and hips. The pain was intense, and I felt trapped, overwhelmed and uncertain of my future.

Luckily, my wonderful friend Matilda was kind enough to lend me her old power chair which she was just about to sell. This has given me to freedom to cook, wash my clothes, see friends, go to the shops, and get some needed sunshine during these short winter days.

I’ve just begun seeing a physiotherapist and learnt that I’m extremely hypermobile. This means my ligaments aren’t holding my body together tight enough. This may well account for a lot of my life long chronic pain and the last 8 years living with fibromyalgia and ME which cause episodes of bed binding exhaustion and a variety of unpleasant life-limiting symptoms.

Very kindly, my friend has offered to sell the chair I’ve borrowed to me for only £500 (It was over 2k new). However, it will soon need new batteries and some minor repairs which will add at least £600 to my costs.

I need to reserve my energy and avoid impact on my joints while I try and strengthen them. This is where having a wheelchair is beyond invaluable, but right now I can’t afford to buy one. I'm currently applying for disability benefits but it's a long and difficult process. I’m on a social services waiting list, but this too can take several months or longer to come into effect. I’m saving my money as best I can, but my income before rent and tax is only £8k a year and I need this help now.

If I can raise at least £500 it will give me at least the freedom to safely move around in my own home.

If I can raise more than £1100, any additional funds will go towards getting a ramp for my front door, some better fitting knee braces, and disability exercise classes that are £10 a week. This will help me move towards a less painful future with more freedom to access everything I need to live a quality life of independence and happiness.

If you’ve taken the time to read this thank you so much.

It’s taken a lot for me to come to terms with needing not only the physical support of a wheelchair but the emotional, social and financial support of others.

If one person shares this fundraiser with just a few friends, and they all do the same, we’ll beat the target when a thousand people are happy to gift the price of a cup to tea. After a year feeling so separate from the world, it would bring me such joy to feel like I will be riding in the result of the world’s biggest tea party.

Thank you again <3 Lucien
