May 9th of 2014 is the day my life changed. I am Carolina Flores-Arocha and I suffered a car accident on the way home from work.
I arrived to the hospital on the verge of death and I was taken into emergency surgery. In total, I underwent three head surgeries and was diagnosed with severe head trauma. The most severe damage happened to my brainstem, which sends the signals from my brain to the rest of my body. It was as if I was born again. I had to learn how to do everything again. I was in a comma for five weeks.
Today, I am thankful for having a second chance at life. I am still recovering. This has been a long journey but in two years my recovery has advanced tremendously. I am now able to do the things others do automatically: breathe, eat, walk and talk.
#Luchaconcarito is an effort to fundraise the money necessary to get to Cuba, which houses the best neurological recovery program in the world. I will be traveling to the CIREN (International Center for Neurological Recovery) a world-wide recognized center for patients with damaged nervous systems. In this center, I will undergo therapy for seven hours so I can come back home better than ever! Please help me achieve this dream!

9 de mayo de 2014, el día que cambió mi vida. Soy Carolina Flores Arocha y sufrí un accidente automovilístico en el trayecto del trabajo a mi casa.
Llegué prácticamente muerta al hospital, donde me operaron de urgencia. En total me realizaron 3 cirugías en la cabeza y mi diagnóstico fue traumatismo craneoencefálico severo.
Mi daño fue mayormente en el tallo cerebral, que se encarga de mandar señales al cuerpo para hacer cualquier cosa, para mí fue volver a nacer.
Estuve 5 semanas en coma y hoy doy gracias por esta segunda oportunidad de vida, me sigo recuperando y para mí ha sido un largo camino, muy corto para otros. En dos años he avanzado muchísimo, ya que he logrado hacer actividades que cualquier persona realiza de manera automática:
• Respirar
• Comer (masticar, tragar líquidos)
• Caminar
• Hablar
Hoy busco con este movimiento, #luchaconcarito, recaudar fondos para irme a Cuba, el país número uno en rehabilitación neurológica, al CIREN (Centro Internacional De Restauración Neurológica) institución mundialmente reconocida que se dedica a atender pacientes que tienen el sistema nervioso lesionado. Ahí tomaré terapias diarias con una duración de 7 horas para poder regresar al 100.
