Public Market Conference or Bust!

Donation protected
Today, I ask for your support by donating to my Go Fund Me campaign.  With your support I will head to Barcelona, Spain and the International Public Market Conference at the end of March.  I will seek out unique projects, ideas and inspiration form the finest in the Public Market industry.

I like to say that I am “made and raised in Madison.”  I feel lucky to have grown-up in my Madison bubble, but also fortunate to have had the opportunity travel throughout my life.  I was raised in a home that was open to guests from around the world and they were invited into our family.  Spending over 20 summers at Phantom Lake YMCA Camp introduced me to staff and campers from around the world.  These interactions made an impact on me and I want to continue to do everything in my power to help the city improve with intent and purpose to make a difference right here in the MadCity!

Why this conference and why now?

This conference takes place as we are planning MadCity Bazaar and the Madison Market District.  It is coming on the heels of a recent trip I took to NYC to attend a conference titled “How to Start a Successful Public Market,” put on by Project for Public Spaces.  PPS also is host to the International Public Market Conference and will dive into many relevant topics for MadCity Bazaar.  I am ready to ask questions, seeking innovation and connections, helping build a strong, sustainable market here in Madison.  Many topics on the conference agenda are relevant to our city’s discussions regarding equity, mobility and urban renewal.  This international perspective will be beneficial as we move forward on these important issues.

Where will your money go?

My Budget:

$1450    Flight and hotel

$525       Conference fees

$100       Ground transportation

$425       Food

$2500 Travel expenses*

*Every dollar raised over my goal of $2500, will go back to MadCity Bazaar projects, operations and vendor assistance.

Thank You!

I could not have gotten this project off the ground without the help of many amazing friends and colleagues. Thank you to my camera man and video editor Tony Ayala for his amazing work; my MadCity Bazaar business partner Joe Mingle for all his encouragement; to Darcy Haber and Solidarity Realty for inviting us to their office to learn more about MadCity Bazaar and letting us film the meeting; Lance Owens of ArtWorking  for allowing us to stop by the studio to get a few shots; Aviv Kammay, Sean Michael Dargan and my husband Geoff Blake-Horst for coming up with locally written and produced music for the video on under 24 hours; to Geoff Blake-Horst for taking on a load of carpool and my kids for understanding that Mommy is working on something big. Also, thanks to all my friends for listening and offering their support and encouragement!

About MadCity Bazaar

While once upon a time it was just a cool idea, the MadCIty Bazaar (MCB) has already grown into the hottest up-scale, pop-up flea market around! Modeled after the wildly successful Brooklyn Flea, MCB features vendors selling locally made art, crafts, value-added food products, high-quality vintage collectibles and other goods. In addition to providing a new sales venue for existing vendors, MCB also provides technical assistance and a low cost but high traffic marketing opportunity for new vendors.

After a successful first season in 2014, planning is underway for an expanded MadCity Bazaar in 2015. MCB will operate Saturday and Sunday, the first and third weekends of the month, May through September in 2015. We are also planning additional pop-up and night market opportunities on a variety of dates during the 2015 season. This year, MCB will be located in the parking lot of the Fiore Shopping Center on East Washington Avenue in the heart of the planned Madison Market District (MMD). Our existing vendor network is continually growing and we anticipate hosting up to 48 vendors during each event. This season, we’ll be partnering with Let’s Eat Out! (LEO) to organize food cart vendors and expanding other on-site amenities including music, placemaking events and kids’ activities.

Madison’s Eastside has proven the perfect location for an upscale flea market of this type and several factors will ensure its continued success. MadCity Bazaar will operate in the MMD and will be promoted, in collaboration with the City, as the beginning of the planned Public Market District. The near Eastside is already home to many students, young professionals and older residents with disposable income while new developments are booming from the Constellation to Union Corners.

The Eastside is also known as the destination of choice for people from other areas looking for interesting restaurants, unusual entertainment venues and unique shopping opportunities. Join the fun and be a part of the Next Big Thing in town! Be a vendor, sponsor or volunteer at the Bazaar so you can be close to the action and part of the scene. Have a non-profit that could use some exposure to the MCB crowd? Apply on-line to request a date for a table at the Bazaar! Interested in running a business in the Bazaar or Market District, but need help turning your dreams into a reality? Email and let us help you get started right away!

This year, MCB will blossom into the coolest new sales venue for local craftspeople and small batch producers. Be part of this cutting edge project as a vendor, non-profit or shopper and help build both the MadCity Bazaar and the Madison Market District. Hope to see you this spring and the MadCity Bazaar!
