My name is Ivonne Soler and I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, where most of my family lives. I currently reside and work in Michigan. I am an attorney at Butzel Long and a member of the Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan and serve on the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan.
I created this fund after receiving an outpour of calls and messages filled with anguish and concern from my friends and colleagues asking: "Ivonne, how can I help Puerto Rico and your family. Where can I donate?" to enable friends to directly contribute to the relief efforts in Puerto Rico. As of today, neither myself, my sister Edleen Soler (in MI), or my brother Gabriel Plaza (in RI) have been able to communicate with any of my family members in Puerto Rico, including my mom since the day before Hurricane Maria devastated the island. We’ve heard that they are “ok,” but we honestly just don’t know.
In all honesty, we do not have enough information about where help is needed the most or which organizations are being the most effective in delivering items and aid. All we know is that there is a crisis. A large majority of the residents still have no communication with the capital or the world and water and food is quickly running out. My goal here is to raise as much money as possible and get help to those who need them the most, including family members, their neighbors and others in their immediate community people. While we have already donated hundreds of cases of water and emergency items to local organizations collecting for Puerto Rico, this is not enough. We need to do more.
100% of the funds raised will be (1) distributed directly to those residents in need in Southeastern Puerto Rico and other areas where help is currently non-existent or slow to arrive or (2) donated to a non-profit organization that is on the ground providing humanitarian relief to that area, once more local organizations are identified. I will update this page as needed, and keep everyone informed as to how their generous donations are being utilized.
As we are all aware, Puerto Rico needs all of the help that they can get right now. The governor is not exaggerating when he says we are on the brink of a humanitarian crisis: millions of American citizens at the mercy of disease, violence, hunger, thirst, and so much more. The situation is worsening with each passing day and the uncertainty of not knowing how my family is doing leaves me and my Michigan family feeling helpless. PLEASE HELP. Anything will do.
