Love for Angel

Dear friends and family,
For those of you that know me well know that 98% of what I post on social media involves my own family or my school family. Being a mother and a teacher is what I was born to do.  After many years in this profession and teaching hundreds of children there have been many joys but also some hardships along the way. Several days ago I was informed that one of my students had been diagnosed with leukemia.  My heart has been heavy and I knew I had to do something. If you will just please take a moment and see through my eyes what I see when I look at my student, Angel Morales. Every morning as he enters the classroom I am greeted with a hug and a smile. Angel is nine years old and loves school. He is the kind of student you don't even realize is there because he has his nose buried in a book. "Diary of a Whimpy Kid" is his favorite. He wants to be an astronaut when he grows up and he is smart enough to achieve it. He is funny, respectful, and one of the sweetest children I have ever taught. He has the most beautiful, curly, crazy hair you have ever seen and at the end of the day when it's sticking up in all directions, it makes me smile. Eleven days ago, he was a student in my classroom. For the past 7 days he has been a patient at Brenner's Children's Hospital with a port in his chest receiving doses of steroids and chemotherapy.  He has the most common type of childhood leukemia so the prognosis is very positive. Unfortunately, he will not be able to return to my classroom for the remainder of the school year and my heart is sad. His extended family lives in Puerto Rico and we all know what has happened there. He has an older sister who has a rare blood disorder known as TTP and a one year old brother. He lives with his mother and step-father. His mother has not left his side and is the most positive person I have met in a long time. Once he is released from the hospital Angel will have to make weekly/biweekly trips to Brenner's to continue chemotherapy which will require an overnight stay. I have started this fund to help with unimaginable medical costs but also traveling expenses and day to day needs that Angel will have. He has a long road ahead of him but with a little help from his teacher and those who know how much I love my students, we might can make this road a little easier. If you are unable to donate, all I ask is that you keep this sweet boy in your prayers.

Much love,
Lawren
