I think it’s safe to say that 2020 has been a year for the books. While some of us have been able to reap the blessings of the change in pace and additional time with family, others have struggled to make ends meet. I am a firm believer that this is where community support comes in. We will all encounter times in our lives when we will be dependent on the kindness and generosity of others to help see us through our darkest moments. These are the times when we learn to surrender and receive. These are the times when others get the opportunity to show up and offer their services. These are the times when we truly embody the meaning of community spirit.
Michael ManyEagles is an Indigenous soapstone carver who teaches an average of 10,000 students a year in schools all over Manitoba. If you’ve ever made a soapstone fish necklace, he was likely the one who taught you.
For those of you who know Michael personally, you likely have been the recipient of his generosity and kindness. He is a father of 5, and has helped raise other children, many of whom call themselves his sons and daughters. He is a sweet soul who consistently shows up for others in their times of need.
Michael founded The Hyve in 2004, which operated in Wolseley as an artist’s studio and women’s safe house for 15 years. It was here that he taught hundreds of people how to carve and conducted ceremonies and cultural awareness workshops for teachers and administrators in the tipi in his backyard. A little over a year ago the landlords unceremoniously evicted him on a moment’s notice, giving only 30 days to pack up a home with 4 suites and all the effects of his deceased mother and brother. Thankfully, friends came to the rescue and the transition was completed in time.
2020 has been tough on all of us, but it has dealt Michael some particularly harrowing blows. Michael had spent a substantial amount of his time caring for his father in the final years of his life until he passed away earlier this year. A few months following his father’s passing, with barely time to grieve, Michael found himself caring for his daughter who was facing severe medical issues.
On top of his caregiving duties, Michael has been battling a number of health conditions of his own and is awaiting tests for two life threatening conditions that were recently diagnosed but are untreated due to the pandemic. His conditions recently contributed to a fainting spell in which he fractured his skull and was concussed, making carving and sales all the more difficult to attend to.
Covid19 has not only made work in schools sparce but is also a severe threat to his health. Additionally, his annual Holiday sale of his artwork was cancelled in November due to the province going into Code Red. With his income stream substantially slashed, and CRB being unavailable to him due to unfortunate circumstances, Michael is in need of some assistance from the community he has so diligently served throughout his lifetime.
Contributions of any size are very much appreciated and will go towards paying bills, buying groceries, and the cost of substantial dental work that is long overdue. Let’s give Michael the gift of peace of mind, love, and support, while he moves through this difficult time. We are all in this together.
