Love for Ushna Part 2

Donation protected
November 28, 2017

Many of you are familiar with Ushna’s story from her previous GoFundMe page which was created last November (See below). Ushna’s parents took the page down in June and the funds were used to pay bills and expenses related to her ongoing medical care. The Khans are extremely grateful for the generous donations that have helped them during this difficult time.  Unfortunately, the Khan’s need help once again to assist with current and upcoming medical expenses.

In July the Khans were very hopeful as Ushna began a clinical trial at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center to treat her brain cancer (Anaplastic Ependymoma - Grade III). However, the tumor has continued to grow and Ushna is no longer eligible for this clinical trial. At this point, the only known option is to travel to the University of Colorado Children's Hospital for brain surgery which is part of a pilot study. Ushna will be the first patient to undergo this surgery.  Ushna left for Colorado on Sunday, November 25, and on Monday, November 27, she began a series of tests  in preparation for surgery. On Tuesday, November 28, all tests were completed and she qualified for surgery.  Medicine will begin on Wednesday, November 29 and surgery will be on December 6th. Recovery time and any additional treatments at this point are unknown, as are the costs of her medical bills, and travel, lodging  during their stay in Colorado. If you would like to help the family with these expenses, please consider making a donation.  Updates will be posted as they become available so please check back often and please share this page.

Ushna is a cheerful, friendly seven year old girl in the second grade in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.  In September of 2014, the day after her first day of kindergarten, Ushna was diagnosed with an Anaplastic Ependymoma (Grade III), a cancerous brain tumor found primarily in children.  She received two surgeries to remove the tumor, and received radiation treatment.

After an extended amount of time at Boston Children’s Hospital, Ushna returned to kindergarten in April of 2015.  In April of 2016, the tumor returned and Ushna received a third surgery at Boston Children’s Hospital and a second radiation treatment throughout this past summer.  Recently the family received devastating news that the tumor is still there and has grown. As of today, Ushna’s doctors and family are discussing the next treatment as well as the possibility of a clinical trial.  Through all of this Ushna has remained a cheerful, friendly, young girl who loves to play with her sisters and brother, and wants to be a teacher when she grows up.  Her resilience under her difficult circumstances continues to amaze everyone around her.  Her smile has brightened the days of many other patients and staff that she has befriended at Boston Children’s Hospital and Christopher’s Haven, while she too was undergoing treatments of her own.

Ushna’s family has been reluctant to accept help from the community up to this point, but many of us know they have incurred significant expenses related to Ushna’s medical treatment and travel to Boston for their family of six.  If you would like to assist with the financial burden they have incurred over the past two and a half years, please consider making a donation.  Thank you.
