Babajide, who I affectionally know as "Jide" has been a good friend of mine for almost 10 years. We were roommates and classmates during dental school and every day, no matter how stressed out I was, he would be there with his big toothy smile and his deep laugh reminding me that "life is extraordinary!"
Jide has struggled over the last year with his mental health causing him to feel extreme paranoia, and has led him to believe that everyone, including those closest to him, are trying to harm him.
Under proper treatment and care, he thrives, but without those resources, he retreats back into the paranoia.
Recently, Jide began believing the thoughts that everyone including his own family and friends are plotting to kill him. He truly believes that entities like the CIA and police are colluding to have him murdered.
Jide's church members, his family, other friends in Philadelphia and I have been trying to find him and get him to a hospital for treatment. Multiple attempts were made, but we were unable to locate him as he was living on the streets. Our fear was that he would encounter police and be hurt before we could get to him.
On Monday, April 2nd, our fears came true. Jide was found wandering the streets in a state of extreme paranoia. The police tasered Jide and arrested him.
Jide has been sitting in a prison cell and is awaiting a hearing. Jide has no idea why he is in prison and is not capable of understanding what has happened. In his mind, he has been kidnapped.
His family and I are putting this GoFundMe together to help raise funds for his legal fees and continued treatment. We need to ensure that Jide gets the proper medical care and treatment so that he can recover. A hospital with long-term psychiatric care is where he needs to be, not prison.
Jide is not a violent person. He is rooted in peace, love and nature. He practices meditation and believes deeply that love and gratitude is the way of life. Over the last 4 years he has dedicated his life to writing daily, up-lifting passages on his blog so that he may help others through their journey in life. He has never harmed another soul and has only fought back when he believed his life was in danger.
My heart is broken. Our hearts are broken.
I can only hope that those who read this feel the love that we have for Jide and can recognize the importance of getting him the much needed medical care and not a long-term prison sentence.
