Dear friends, family, and community members:

It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing the passing of Desalegn Alemayehu Worku.

After a long battle with several difficult health related challenges, we now mourn the sad loss of our long time brother to the Kitchener Waterloo Habesha community. On July 26th, 2021, at 8:05 am, in the hospital is when he took his last breath and  passed away, departing ways with us here in this life on Earth.

Sharp in our memory also remains the unexpected and untimely death of Mr. Worku's lifelong love, Hanna Angelo Shara, this past September; an extremely painful and sad experience for their family of which we are all very much a part of and will forever remember. All within less than a year now that their two children's lives will truly never be the same. We will never forget the memories of smiles and laughter from the people who gave us so much happiness and always had a joke to tell, and most importantly the love they shared with one another.

For those of you who knew Mr. Worku, it was without question, his strong dedication as husband and life-long partner of Hanna, and the eternal responsibility he owned as the father of his two amazing sons. You probably knew Desalegn for his inviting smile and welcoming, playful demeanour, which we will forever keep in our hearts.

September 11, 2020, marks the tragic day in which Hanna Angelo Shara tragically passed away, leaving us broken as we experienced the unimaginable. Through one of the toughest times the world is currently facing, we witnessed the pain of Desalegn and his kids managing a new life with challenges of health and sickness, mental and emotional despair, confusion, and never-ending loss of life which still had so much life left to live.

Over the course of the last ten and a half months, we prayed.

We prayed as a community,

We prayed as a people from one nation,

We prayed as mothers and fathers,

We prayed as children of parents that create our families,

We prayed as friends and family members alike,

To see the people we care so much for to be strong and to remind us that our time on this Earth is limited and that we may have compassion and understanding for we too,  cannot escape the reality.

It's hard to imagine how one's heart learns to survive each day without its other half. Hanna was the blood running through his veins, supporting her husband through thick and thin, so without this precious love it makes sense that at some point the heart must quit.

Unfortunately, Desi was sick for a long period of time and endured through numerous health challenges, his heart, his kidneys, and his lungs were fighting to support him, but his body became weaker and in late last year, he was admitted to the hospital, fighting a severe pneumonia. Unfortunately, his condition worsened and he fought to stay alive with life support, and in a coma. After one long month of hardship, like a miracle, Desi awakened. He had a long road of recovery ahead of him, but God gave him another chance at life, and to live and spend time with the people who love him, and the people he loves. Learning to stand again after being in the hospital bed for so long, learning to walk, and learning how to persevere showed us Desi's character and lasting willingness to continue fighting on, no matter what happens. After months of physical recovery and rehabilitation at the hospital, Desi was ready to return to his home, but it became clear that he needed a more suitable place for his mobility, so he and his son started the process of finding a new place to live. Of course, leaving one's home where so many memories were made, especially recently losing one's wife, is an extraordinary challenge to overcome indeed, but Desi fought on, even from leaving the hospital. It was hoped that he would finally have his time to live his life in peace, comfort, and joy, but his health condition worsened quickly leading to his very unfortunate passing.

Without question, the Worku family was not at all prepared for the burden that comes along with such a tragedy of losing two crucial adult supports in less than one year.

That is why we are reaching out to you all, our Ethiopian association, and beyond, in hopes that you will show your usual Habesha pride and support. We are currently coordinating a modest but proper ceremony to take place in the next few days. Every little bit helps and is greatly appreciated!

As you can see, our goal is to raise money which will directly help the family in every way imaginable, mainly with costs related to funding the funeral and memorial services. While also considering this, please keep in mind the community in which Desalegn and especially his beloved wife, Hanna helped us to create, so that we can do our best to honour their names, legacies, and kids.

THANK YOU ALL!

LOVE YOU ALL!

FOREVER & ALWAYS!
