We are Nico and Franzi and we would like to tell you our story.
We are an Argentinian (Nico) and German (Franzi) couple that serendipitously met in the Algarve and very quickly proceeded to fall madly in love.
Nico had been living and working in the Algarve for over a year before we met. After a time, it was clear that we want to start a life in Portugal together.
Nico was working and living on a 40 hectares eco-glamping site in the Algarve, where he asked Franzi to join him to live. He had invested a lot of time and energy into the project, including building his own ‘beach bar’ by the lake and maintaining the land. There were many volunteers at the project, and before she would leave for work, Franzi enjoyed lovingly preparing meals for them.
Over time, we had been saving, and one day we decided to take a leap, put our fears aside and invest in a bigger dream. We purchased the materials to build six geodesic domes, bringing a new style of structure to the place , and in agreement with our dear friend (the eco glamping project owner), we agreed to create space to erect the domes on the land.
Then in March, the global pandemic due to COVID 19, meant that the site no longer carried with it any certainty, we did not know if they would be able to receive any guests for the summer – and our dream was under threat. However we decided to take the risk to follow our dreams and continue to push ahead with building the domes.
We had cleared and prepared with deck, shading and compost toilets six plots of land and already erected three domes, when on the 19th of June, disaster struck. A wild fire broke out in the Algarve tearing through the hills, leaving behind in its trail of destruction the eco glamping project, reduced to ash. The land scorched and the site abolished.
One of the many casualties of this tragedy was our dream, now destroyed. We had not only lost our home, but also the space we had helped our dear friends so lovingly curate.
And now, we have to start again.
Right now, we are tirelessly looking for new land in the Algarve, so that we can create a new space together, and erect the remaining Geodomes that we managed to save from the fire.
And, in order to do this – we need your help.
For now, our dream is still alive, we just need a generous hand from the kindness of friends and strangers to realise it. If you are compelled and able to help by contributing, even a little, it would mean so very much to us.
