Dear friends, community, and kind-hearted strangers,
In the early hours of Friday, July 18th, an explosion rocked my building in Reigersbos, Amsterdam, sending shockwaves through the structure and sparking a fire right outside my apartment door. While the fire was fortunately contained by emergency responders before it could destroy the room itself, thick black smoke poured in—coating every inch of my home in soot.
All of my furniture, 80% of my clothing, electronics, and essential household items are beyond salvageable due to the toxic residue. And to make matters worse, I’ve just found out that my contents insurance (Inboedelverzekering) was never in place—I only had liability coverage. That means nothing I lost is covered. My landlord’s insurance doesn’t apply to personal belongings either.
This is one of the most difficult moments I’ve faced, both financially and emotionally.
Normally, I’m not someone who asks for help. But this time, I simply can’t do it alone.
I’m asking for your support—whether big or small—to help raise €3,000 to replace the most basic essentials I need to rebuild my life and feel safe and comfortable in my home again:
- A bed & frame
- A couch
- Basic clothing (t-shirts, underwear, socks, jacket, etc.)
- Pillows, duvet, sheets, and casings
- Curtains
- Towels & hand towels
- Plates, bowls, cutlery, pots, and pans
- Microwave
- Air fryer
IMPORTANT: Every euro will go directly toward replacing these necessities. If by God’s grace some is left over or if more is raised than I need, I will donate the remainder to the RISE Foundation on Sint Maarten—a cause close to my heart that works tirelessly to uplift the community through outreach and empowerment.
Even if you cannot donate, simply reading this, sharing the link, or sending a prayer means more to me than you know. That night could have ended so much worse. No amount of insurance can replace a life, and I’m grateful to still have mine. My spirit is shaken, but my faith is unbroken—and I believe help always finds a way when you ask with humility and honesty.

For knowledge, what is Soot?: Soot is a fine black powder made up of tiny carbon particles that are produced when materials like wood, plastic, or fuel burn incompletely. In the case of a fire or explosion, thick smoke often carries this soot throughout nearby areas — coating walls, furniture, clothing, and electronics in a sticky, toxic residue.
Why is soot dangerous to keep in your home?
Soot isn’t just dirt — it’s highly toxic. It can contain a mix of:
- Carbon monoxide
- Heavy metals
- Acids
- Carcinogens (cancer-causing substances)
These particles are so small that they can become airborne again with just a slight movement, making them easy to inhale without noticing.
Health risks of soot exposure:
- Breathing problems, coughing, and chest pain
- Asthma flare-ups or lung irritation
- Eye, skin, and throat irritation
- Long-term exposure can increase the risk of cancer or heart disease
Even if items look salvageable, keeping soot-covered furniture, clothes, bedding, or electronics indoors can be extremely hazardous to your health. The particles settle deep into fabrics, cushions, and even circuit boards — making them nearly impossible to fully clean or safely reuse.
