Breakout Programs

Los Angeles Baroque’s first fund drive, in the fall of 2017, while falling just short of its $5,000 goal, supported its community outreach and scholarships. Further, it enabled LAB to purchase a harpsichord to enhance its continuo capabilities.

In the fall of 2018 Los Angeles Baroque will undertake its second fund drive in order to support its 2019 program.  Its only sources of income continue to be member dues and free-will donations at concerts.   It seeks to again raise $5,000 through gifts of 10 lead donors @$300 each for a total of $3000, and then the remaining $2000 through an online drive from November 15 through December 30, 2017. Lead donors are “ANGELS” to us, will have their names listed in the program and will be given preferential seating at the winter and spring concerts in 2019.

Scholarships. LAB gives opportunities for anyone who wants to participate in the LAB learning environment a chance to do so. In 2018, we awarded seven full scholarships to those who demonstrated merit, need and motivation. In 2019 we will award eight full scholarships.

Workshops. Participant fees do not cover all costs related to conducting workshops for the community. LAB has held workshops in each of its first two years, and will continue its annual commitment with a workshop to be held on Memorial Day, 2019.

Free Community Concerts. In 2017-18 LAB presented six community concerts, plus its season of three concerts at St. James Episcopal Church, LAB’s home since its inception in 2016. In 2019 it will continue this commitment to the community with five community concerts planned.

Breakout programs. In the spring of 2019 LAB will present its first concert opera: Venus and Adonis by John Blow, featuring a cast of four singers. In addition, it is planning an exchange program with its sister community Baroque orchestra in San Diego: Kensington Baroque. Also on the breakout program agenda: a weekend Baroque Festival at St. James giving local early music chamber ensembles a unique performance opportunity.
