LORSH: Menstrual Product Drive for Fort Severn

Donation protected
Hi everyone! We are medical students and the Local Officers of Reproductive and Sexual Health at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM). We are asking for your help to buy sustainable menstrual products for the fly-in community of Fort Severn First Nation in Northwestern Ontario.

NOSM has a strong relationship with Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario, who provide students with invaluable learning opportunities. As students who are dedicated to addressing the priority health concerns of the people and communities of Northern Ontario, we have organized a Menstrual Product Drive to relieve the financial burden on those who menstruate in Fort Severn First Nation.

People in rural communities can expect to pay double the price for the same products found in larger cities. This gap is even more extreme in remote fly-in First Nation Communities. For example, a box of tampons can range from $16.00-$45.00, leaving people to choose between menstrual products or food security. Now is our chance to give back!

Non-reusable menstrual products contribute to climate change. Over 200 billion menstrual products are dumped into landfills every year and can take over 500 years to decompose. Chemicals found in pads can reach the soil causing groundwater pollution and loss of soil fertility. Single use products contain synthetic fragrances and chemicals. This waste is hazardous to human and environmental health.

For these reasons, we have partnered with LadyCrimsonClothEmporium from Sudbury Ontario to provide this community with reusable menstrual pads. Funds raised will go towards purchasing the following menstrual product kits (https://ladycrimsonclothemporium.ca/):
            Heavy flow kit $40.00
            Regular flow kit $35.00

There are approximately 100 people who menstruate in this community. Our goal is to provide a menstrual kit to every individual who needs one.

Listen to our interviews CBC  and Radio Canada .

Thank you, Merci, Miigwetch for your generosity!
