Loriene,s Medical Assistance

I love my sister Loriene McFarland Zarr beyond what words can describe. But let me try. She is a quiet, giving and compassionate human being, part of the hidden fabric that contributes to the quality of life we all take for granted. And she is a quiet giver to those around her, with never a complaint or an expectation of anything in return.

I am writing today because this silent giant of compassion now needs your help. It seems that life has given her one tragic twist after another, draining the hope from her soul.

Loriene, now 49, married her husband Rick in 1999 with all the dreams of an idyllic life together. But within six years, Rick developed cateracts and retinopathy, and by 2011, he was totally blind and unable to work. With only Loriene’s income, they soon lost everything they had built together and found themselves relegated to a small apartment.

In 2014, Loriene noticed that her right side had become numb. A trip to the hospital revealed the unexpected news: She had multiple sclerosis. She underwent different treatments of the next two years, only to be afflicted by lesions. She was getting disoriented and confused at her job of 18 years. Her left leg collapses without warning causing her to fall.

Loriene’s employer was concerned for her safety and kindly set up a home office for her. But increasingly, she was unable to complete the most basic tasks that had been second nature to her. Her motor skills continued to deteriorate, she has little balance, her memory is fading, and she is unable to multi task. She spent her days stuffing envelopes.

In April 2017, a doctor of neuropsychology confirmed the worst: She would never be capable of learning a new job.

Loriene has begun the long process of applying for disability. But this will take years. It took her husband four years to receive disability even though he was completely blind.

Loriene might not be around to see that happen. Her doctors insist she must begin a new round of treatments this fall – treatments that cost $65,000 for six months, and she may or may not have insurance.

My sister has devoted her life to giving to others, caring for others, loving others. I am asking for your help. Whether it is $5 or $10 or $100, everything helps. If you can’t donate, please share this with others who can.

Join with us to give back to this woman who has given so much to help others.

All money raised will go directly to pay for medical expenses, and some living expenses as needed.
