Lori “Coop” Cooper

Friday, July 20, 2018, Lori was on her way to Clovis NM, to attend her best friend’s memorial service. She never made it to Clovis because her tire blew and she lost control of the truck causing it to roll three times landing upside down in the ditch. Lori was wearing her seatbelt so luckily she was not thrown from the truck. However, she did suffer a fractured pelvis, sternum, vertebra in her neck, and her left arm is as one report said, “mangled.” The humerus and ulna are broken. The area from just below her elbow to her wrist was degloved, and she severed the brachial artery. Surgery was performed after Lori was airlifted from Moriarity, NM back to Albuquerque. The surgery repaired the artery which provides blood to her hand and they were able to pull her skin together to cover the area that was degloved.

It is unclear how long Lori will remain in the UNM hospital in Albuquerque. As of August 17 it has been four  weeks that she has been hospitalized. She has been told she will have to go to a physical therapy rehab facility when she is released from the UNM hospital. Her stay at the PT rehab facility could be up to two weeks. When she is finally able to go home she will need home health care and outpatient occupational therapy. Lori has a long road ahead of her to get back on her feet and regain use of her left arm.

No matter how prepared a family may be, unexpected medical expenses can be devastating. This is especially true when a teacher’s salary is the main source of income. Lori is a fifth grade teacher at Manzano Mesa Elementary and has been with the Albuquerque public school system for the past eleven years. Before coming to Albuquerque she taught in Clovis, NM and Alabama. Her sons, Robert and Joshua, live with her and help with living expenses.

Any help you feel you can give is greatly appreciated.
