Unfortunately, my world is still locked down every day. My social life remains limited to my living room and my inner circle. Since October 2021, I have been confronted daily with the consequences of COVID-19, which have manifested in me as Long COVID.

<div>I can't wait to be the teacher, sister, daughter, and friend I was before COVID. I too want to leave this COVID era behind. For me, I see this opportunity in a treatment in the United States.

<div>We, the family and friends of Michelle, share this story with you from the bottom of our hearts.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In October 2021, Michelle, a lively and ambitious woman, was 34 years old (now 37), a primary school teacher, and like many others, contracted COVID. Unlike most young people, she did not recover after a few days of rest. This turned out to be the start of a nightmare that continues to this day, in February 2024.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>No recovery in sight. Michelle keeps getting sicker.</strong>
</div>
<div>Michelle’s COVID infection in October 2021 initially seemed to be limited to a severe flu with fatigue and reduced stamina. However, after some work activities, it led to dizziness, extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, and later also pain around the lungs. Eventually, the diagnosis of Long COVID was made.

<div>Reintegration into her work had to be scaled back more and more. Social gatherings resulted in fever attacks, body-wide pain, and exhaustion. Michelle has fluctuating days. There are moments when she can leave the house and you wouldn’t notice anything unusual, but when she returns home, she has to rest or sleep and suffers from her symptoms.

<div>The symptoms Michelle experiences daily include: muscle weakness, exercise intolerance, fever attacks, shortness of breath, chest and back pain, pain around the lungs, brain fog, forgetfulness, headaches, irritability, sleep problems, concentration issues, inflammation, extremely high heart rates and palpitations, sensory processing disturbances, and loss of voice.

<div><strong>For over 2 years, Michelle’s life has been on hold due to Long COVID.</strong>
</div>
<div>Since her COVID infection, Michelle is a shadow of who she once was. Her life has been reduced to the small world around her home. She can no longer do her job, her employment contract has ended, and she has been declared unfit for work.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Desperately seeking appropriate treatment</strong>
</div>
<div>For a long time, we have been searching daily for possible treatments. Unfortunately, after numerous medical tests, treatments, and visits to specialists in the Netherlands, the chance of recovery here seems (still) non-existent.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There is an ongoing study in the Netherlands showing that Long COVID is indeed a medical condition and not something that is "all in the mind," but whether this will lead to an effective treatment or medication remains uncertain. In the Netherlands, this often means waiting for years, and that is something Michelle cannot afford.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Treatment abroad At AVIV CLINIC </strong>
</div>
<div>However, there is a promising treatment in the United States. A scientific study shows that this treatment is highly successful for Long COVID. This hyperbaric oxygen therapy originated in Israel, where positive results have been achieved over 15 years in combating various diseases, including Long COVID. This method is used in clinics in Florida, Israel, and Dubai. The approach proven by scientific research is not yet applied in the Netherlands.

<div>During the first week of treatment, Michelle will undergo a full medical examination, including brain scans and extensive blood tests. Based on these results, an individual treatment plan will be created, followed by 12 weeks of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) combined with neuroplastic therapy. The full treatment lasts 4 months.
</div>

</div>
<div>This therapy stimulates the brain to restore lost functions. Additionally, new blood vessels are created, helping to address the oxygen shortage in damaged tissue. The goal is to restore and stimulate the disrupted systems in the brain, which leads to the production of new stem cells. During the treatment, a personalized neuro-rehabilitation program will also begin under the guidance of a multidisciplinary team.

<div><strong>The cost of the treatment is very high.</strong>
</div>
<div>With additional costs such as flights, accommodation, car rental, and other expenses, the total amount needed for Michelle to undergo this treatment is approximately €75,000-€80,000. On top of that, she still has her regular living expenses in the Netherlands.

Helaas is mijn wereld nog altijd dagelijks op slot. Mijn samenleving beperkt zich nog steeds tot mijn huiskamer en mijn innercircle. Sinds oktober 2021 word ik nog altijd dagelijks geconfronteerd met de gevolgen van corona, die zich bij mij uiten tot Long COVID.

<div>Michelle loopt in oktober 2021, net als veel anderen, COVID op
</div>
<div>In het najaar van 2021 raakte Michelle, een levenslustige en ambitieuze vrouw van toen 34, nu 37 jaar, juf op een basisschool, net als veel anderen besmet met COVID. In tegenstelling tot de meeste jonge mensen herstelt ze niet na een paar dagen uitzieken. Dit bleek de start van een nachtmerrie, die in februari 2024 nog steeds voortduurt.

<div><strong>Van herstel geen sprake. Michelle wordt steeds zieker</strong>
</div>
<div>De coronabesmetting in oktober 2021 leek zich in eerste instantie te beperken tot een flinke griep met vermoeidheid en een verminderde conditie. Na werkzaamheden leidt het echter ook tot duizeligheid, extreme vermoeidheid, benauwdheid en later ook pijn rondom de longen. Uiteindelijk wordt de diagnose Long COVID vastgesteld.
</div>

</div>
<div>Het re-integreren op haar werk moet steeds meer worden afgeschaald. Sociale bijeenkomsten leiden tot koortsaanvallen, pijn in haar hele lichaam en uitputting.
</div>
<div>Michelle heeft wisselende dagen, er zijn momenten op dagen dat ze even de deur uit kan, je zult dan niks aan haar zien of weinig aan haar merken. Maar als ze thuis komt, trekt ze zich terug en moet ze slapen/ rusten en krijgt ze klachten.
</div>
<div>Klachten die Michelle dagelijks ervaart zijn; spierzwakte, inspanningsintolerantie, koortsaanvallen, benauwdheid, pijn op de borst en rug, pijn rondom de longen, hersenmist, vergeetachtigheid, hoofdpijn, prikkelbaarder, slaapproblemen, concentratieproblemen, ontstekingen, extreem hoge hartslagen en kloppingen, verstoring van prikkelverwerking en stemverlies.
</div>

<div><strong>Door long covid staat Michelle’s leven al ruim 2 jaar stil</strong>
</div>
<div>Michelle is na haar Covidbesmetting een schim van wie ze was. Haar leven is gereduceerd tot de kleine wereld rondom haar huis. Ze kan haar werk niet meer uitvoeren, haar dienstverband is beëindigd en ze is afgekeurd voor werk. 
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Wanhopig op zoek naar een gepaste behandeling</strong>
</div>
<div>Al lange tijd zoeken wij dagelijks naar mogelijkheden en eventuele behandelingen. Helaas zonder resultaat want na een tal van medische onderzoeken, veel behandelingen en specialisten in Nederland te hebben gezien, lijkt de kans op genezing binnen Nederland (nog) niet te bestaan.
</div>

</div>
<div>Weliswaar is er een onderzoek gaande in Nederland waaruit is gebleken dat het wel degelijk een medische aandoening is en niet iets is wat tussen de oren zit, maar de vraag of dit zal leiden tot een doorslaggevende behandeling dan wel medicatie is moeilijk te zeggen. Vaak spreek je in Nederland dan ook over jaren en zolang te wachten is voor haar ondoenlijk.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Behandeling in buitenland</strong>
</div>
<div>Maar er is een hoopgevende behandeling in Amerika. Uit een wetenschappelijke studie blijkt dat deze behandeling zeer succesvol is bij Long COVID. Deze hyperbare zuurstof therapie vindt haar oorsprong in Israël waar men reeds 15 jaar positieve ervaringen heeft opgedaan in de bestrijding van div. ziektes en waar ook met Long Covid verbeterde resultaten geboekt zijn. In Florida, Israel en in Dubai wordt deze methode toegepast in een kliniek. De werkwijze zoals uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek is bewezen, wordt in Nederland (nog) niet toegepast.
</div>

</div>
<div>Tijdens de eerste week zal Michelle volledig worden onderzocht door o.a. scans van de hersenen en een uitgebreid bloedonderzoek. Op basis van die onderzoeken wordt een individueel programma samengesteld waarna er een traject van 12 weken hyperbare zuurstoftherapie (HBOT) zal starten in combinatie met een neuroplastische behandeling. In totaal duurt het traject 4 maanden.
</div>

<div>Bij deze behandeling worden de hersenen gestimuleerd om uitgevallen functies te herstellen. Daarnaast worden er nieuwe bloedvaten aangemaakt, zodat het zuurstoftekort in beschadigd weefsel wordt opgeheven. Het doel hiervan is om de ontregelde systemen in het brein te herstellen en te stimuleren. Hierdoor worden er nieuwe stamcellen aangemaakt. Daarnaast wordt er tijdens de behandeling ook een persoonlijk neuro-revalidatietraject gestart onder begeleiding van een multidisciplinair team.

<div>De kosten van de behandeling zijn alleen erg hoog. Met een aantal bijkomende kosten (zoals vlucht, huisvesting, autohuur en bijkomende kosten voor Michelle naast de behandeling komt dit totaal uit op ongeveer 75.000-80 000 euro. Daarnaast heeft ze ook nog haar vaste lasten in Nederland.
