Loneman School Student Ambassadors #NoKXL

Donation protected
In the last 2 months of the 2019 school year, the 4th grade class at Isna Wica Owayawa (Loneman School) in Oglala, South Dakota delved into a Design For Change USA project where we researched the Keystone XL Pipeline, specifically in the context of our community.

Through this project, we learned about climate change, pros and cons to oil pipelines, and most importantly, how our families and community feel about the KXL. We mapped out the issue using a root cause analysis chart, which helped us understand that we can't learn about pipelines without first understanding this land and the settler-colonialism/colonization that has put it in jeopardy.

Our project narrowed in on SD Bill 189, a.k.a the Riot Boosting Act  passed by the state legislature and governor Kristi Noem back in March 2019. We learned, through the help of our friend Nick Tilsen from NDNCollective , that this law aims to curtail our rights to protest--against the KXL, for our land and our people.

The students decided that it was time to be heard. They researched all 105 state lawmakers, their home addresses and whether each lawmaker voted to pass SD Bill 189. We wroteletters to these lawmakers, urging them to rethink their vote on SD Bill 189.

We have learned that our KXL pipeline project was selected by Design For Change USA as a winning submission.  A few of us will be traveling to the global DFC conference to represent our story and community at the Vatican in November!
